172 engines ???

r5 gtt with 172 turbo eng
quick question, how much does a good 2nd hand 172 engine go for?

thing is im goin for the big boost build and it seems pointless to strip my engine down to do it tbh, mite aswell get a std engine and do the work to that, then its a straight and simple swap over and i can sell my engine on to some1 wantin to do the same conversion.

so wat sort of boost are you running atm ? its just that im thinking of uping my boost a little on my 172t wot are you doing to the engine?pistons?crank?cams?injectors? i heard that the 172 engine can take 25psi is this true?wat have you done to the gear box mate?sorry to hijack your thread just seems your the only guy on here exept me with a 172turbo engine!

The engine will take a fair bit of boost its Det etc you need to worry about.
The turbo block F4R was built for a reason bigger and thicker so the 172 isn't the best starting point.
However to get a f4RT engine to fit you need the box which is bigger but will take more power (this I suspect is the weakest link in a turbo 172 with a better clutch)

Det is definately the problem as it is in most turbo engines when upping the boost.

Should be okay though by using good fuel and getting it mapped by someone who knows what they are doing.

well if you get the fueling and air right det wont be a prob. that only happens when it runs lean. wouldnt want to run too much boost on the standard pistons though. if you are going for big boost get forge internals ect and a metal head gasget. (can you get these for a clio?? or would it be custom??)

TBH if I was really hungry for more power I'd sell up and buy another car with a turbocharged engine....seems like quite a job & money to convert the OE lump.

im currently running 6.5psi and 255bhp mate, just havina few bits done to up the power to around 320bhp but that will only be for a short time and they its comin out for forged interals ect. not 100% sure on the final spec as of yet but alot is custom spec, gearbox if defo custom with a drag lsd shoved in for good measure ;)

theres no such thing as the engine can only handle 25psi bud, its down to how the engine is built? (i.e to run high comp or low comp), how it is set up/fuelin? what spec you hav gone to (pistons, rods, ect.)

let post up full spec when its finished and proven its times at the pod but not until lol

forged internals and metal headgaskets are avalible for the 172 engine

£550 or so.
Best idea is a different engine for making a more powerfcul car reliable.

it cant be that bad it run a 12.6 on its first run at pod,and its been alright till now

  172 cup'd extreme
The F4R 7xx series small block engines need the bottom ends bracing after 250bhp start shooting pistons thats why Ren built the 8xx Series (megane, vel satis and new clio) as the bottom end is much stronger , and it can take stonger gearbox's i wouldnt even dream about running a JC5 box with a turbo , i'm on my 3rd one in 12k miles and my car is only 190 brake!
