172 Excusive bought! New boy alert!

Hi All,

Picked up my second Ren after having a ph2 19 16v many moons ago. Turns out after a little bit of digging it's Hulksters old Exclusive,number 131. All seems sweet bar the much documneted diesel like idle noises, so its condition is a real credit to him


Seems a lovely car, and looking forward to having a meddle around with it. I was either going to fit some Eibach sportlines, or splashing out a Gaz coilover kit as I have always used their stuff (family friend and all!) and rate it. What are your thoughts please guys?

welcome to the ph1 club

put some pics up mate and check through any history to see when/if the belts and dephaser have been done.

if it sounds like a diesel on idle,it could be the dephaser

The idle is rough on these, worry it sounds rough when revved. Keep it standard or fit neon lights (they'll add as much extra power as all the other bits you'll read about ((bar cams, turbos etc which are quite big £s)) ).

Thanks for the welcome guys. I would take pics but it's looking a. Bit sorry for itself at the moment! It's on four axle stands while the wheels get refurbed and I pontificate over what suspension to fit and change the brakes, and the seats are out to give the carpets a proper clean up, and having a little repair done on the drivers leg bolster!

It had a belt and tensioner at 50 odd k in 2010 (now on 77k) but no record of a dephaser pulley mores the pity!! I though I had bought a donkey when I got home and heard the racket it was making! Revving though it sounds sweet, so I guess all is well in there?!
I would say handy with the tools, but I don't have the locking pins etc so will ask a ren tech I know...

I have a cossie, so more turbo dramas needed, although a pair of cams in a ported head sounds appealing.... Std exhaust is still hanging in there too!

Is the 172 Exclusive standard ? i.e. BBS wheels & full leather interior?

The 172 is standard and bar some suspension mods which I still can't decide on - gaz coilovers or some eibachs on the original shocks- it will be staying that way. Does anyone do a stainless that keeps the tailpipe hidden by the way?

Avoid GAZ on these, they aren't very good. If your budget allows you to get bilsteins,'get those otherwise eibach with some new genuine shocks and it'll be perfect.

The issue here is I get the Gaz shocks at a very nice rate, as he is a good friend of mine, so great value...I did see something on an old MOT about misting around the shock so they will be up for replacement soon, Oh I dont know!
A set of Eibachs and genuine shocks wont be too far from the cost of the gaz kit..
See my dilemma?!

New genuine shocks are around £35-45 each. I've seen far too many gaz's leaking or siezed. And they're too harsh for the road IMO.

I am in Chelmsford Essex, a stones throw from Gaz's factory ;-)

I am concerned that the spring rates are a bit harsh as Dan says, rates are 275/250. I dont think my Cossie has 275 lb front springs!

One car I never owned but wanted was a Cosworth of some variety (namely Escort).

I work for Ford so have lots of Ford nuts around me (including me!) - one of my buddies has a white Escort Cosworth (non sunroof motorsport shell), a restored MK2 with wide arches running Life racing and a Duratec plus a rather mint Focus RS MK2. All in white!

There was a chap at Ford who daily drove a D reg Sierra Cosworth everyday to where I work since buying it new in 1986! I tried to track him down (nearly 4000 employees where I work so it was hard!) but since heard it got rear ended in some traffic! Think its getting re-shelled.

Put some pics of the Clio up mate, still don't know what the Exclusive model is....
