172 IN SNOW

Hows does everyones 172's fair in the snow ?

In Aberdeen we have a dusting of snow the now, but was just wandering what peoples expeiriences of 172's are in this weather :S

not too good. I find 1st gear is rendered useless in snow, so don't bother using it.

i ditched my last car in the snow, that had abs and traction control etc.

needless to say if we get snow down here i wont be taking the cup off the drive!!

light car + wide tyres + powerful engine = not good with snow/ice. Would be better off in a an aygo with it's spacesaver width wheels in that weather. That said if you dont drive like a c**k and respect the conditions there's no reason why you should have an accident.

too late as soon as the weather forecast says snow the cars drive themselves to the nearest ditch and get in.

Set off to do a bit of overtime this morning and the motorway was deserted at that time as you would expect. I thought here we go..... then suddenly I drove into some massive blizzard, the motorway was so bad you couldn't see any of the lanes.

Once I got off the ESP was having a field day. I was being extra extra careful considering i've only had it 4 days but blimey it doesn't like the snow ! I went round a very easy bend very slow and was just sliding toward the curb while the ESP went mad, then the traction control is on at 10mph with tiny acceleration,

I nearly had to abort turning into work as it just refused to slow down to turn into the corner ! Obviously I was going very slow anyway but the abs just came on resulting in no deceleration at all. I decided to take it anyway and the ESP comes back on and did it's first useful thing of the day!

I was convinced I was going to end up mashing it up or end up with something sliding into me.

I had no problems driving my 172 Cup in the snow last year. It was no small amount either, the only problem was the other tickets on the road that have absolutely NO idea how to alter their driving for the snow!

I also once thought all the complaining about the 182 in the snow was due to driver error. I've been driving since I was 17, and I'm now 35 - major major issues in the snow. The ABS makes using the brakes a waste of effort, as there is ZERO braking effect and the car just carries on with the pedal vibrating, even with the very smallest pedal pressure. Up a sliiiiiiight incline, I was trying to pull away in 3rd gear - with our without TC, I was going backwards down the incline toward a Focus. Virtually impossible. Everything I know about driving in snow was of little help in my 182.

We had a very heavy snowfall at the start of January and that gave me my first experience of driving the 182 in the snow.

At first it was much better than i expected as i thought the powerful engine would result in nothing but wheel spin. However the traction control did its job and managed to get the power down without too much spinnage.

However without the traction control, the car is useless, just spins and spins and goes nowhere.

The biggest problem was inclines, the car really struggled on anything larger than a slight incline, and i got half way up a hill, only to slide backwards down it. Managed to get it to spin through 180 degrees to face the opposite direction and slow it down to a stop.

So i think they are allright in the snow, as long as you stay on the flat.

172 is loads worse than my old 1.4 even with the same width of tyre. ABS is annoyingly crap and, like Roy, Im having to re-learn how to drive this car in the snow

i love driving in the snow although we've not really had the chance down here for a few years. this is really, really dumb but i used to take a jacket, a shovel and some old carpet (for traction, if needs be) and go for short drives around the deserted country lanes around where i live - great fun on a nice day

i guess the Clio will suffer in the snow because of the FWD/power/tyre thing but they feel fairly manageable so could be fun

Perhaps it's the 172Cups lack of ABS that helps in the snow? The ABS in my 182 is way too sensitive, and always cuts in long before the tryre actually locks. It doesn't allow any slip at all, which could be the major issue in the snow.

Must say I didn't have any problem taking off or braking, but of course no ABS or TCS in the Cup. Why not pull the fuse for the ABS next time?

Used to get a lot of snow here during winter but now, due to the changing climate no more :/. Pretty used to handling in snow already. Practice makes perfect so whenever you get some, go to a private large area and try how your car acts when slippery. Gives you more confidence handling any surprising situations.

as said its the light car plus wide tyres and big power its not a great mixture lol my mum has a big heavy MK2 1.2 16v clio with tiny tyres and its so much better in the snow, can actually nearly drive normally in the snow in it!

172 i need to limp everywhere
