172 issues . . .

  Clio 172
Hey folks,

this is my first post on here, so hello to you all! :-D

I've just bought myself a 172 as a second car and there are a few issues that I hope some of you can help with?

The biggest problem is a thumping sound when I change gear. It comes from under the car . . . I was told it may be just an engine mount, but I was also told it may be several other things, including possibly needing a new gearbox???? I took it to a garage today, but they we're very vague to say the least . . .

The other thing I've noticed is that the gear stick squeeks when changing gear! I've owned a lot of cars in my time, but never heard anything like this! Anyone else found this happening on their cars?

The speedo is a bit dodgy between gears too, but I read on here that it's probably down to a sensor that needs replacing so I'll look into that . . .

It's a great car for the money and good fun to drive, but just need advice on the above really. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy.

Get yourself a polybush doggy bone mount kit! You may also need new upper mounts! As for the squeak have you popped the gear lever gaiter off and greased it up? As for the speedo try a new pick up!!

Thanks for the reply.

What is a polybush doggy bone mount kit and do you know where I can get it from??

I will try greasing up under the gaiter . . . any grease good for the job?

Good old White grease will do the trick mate, once the gaiter is off, clean the linkage before spraying more grease on! Try www.ruderacing.co.uk for the power flex bush, I got mine for about £27 delivered! You won't believe the difference when you've fitted it!

The doggy bone kit, you have an engine mount that fastens to the bottom of the gearbox and also fixes to the subframe, when the bushes wear, it allows excess movement and your exhaust manifold hits the subframe!! Takes about 10 mins to fit, you'll need some basic tools and a hammer to knock the old bushes out (or a press)

Thanks for the replys folks.

I'm gonna take it into another garage tomorrow to get a second opinion . . . according to the mechanic who looked at it today, the car was literally falling apart and he took it upon himself to point out every single little flaw! Nice of him, considering I only went in to have the knocking sound investigated . . .

Hopefully it is something as simple as the bushes, although, I won't be DIYing it I'm afraid, I tend to break things when I DIY it! Haha.

  Trophy Turbo :)
The issues your describing sound like the rear mount is on its way out, the exhaust will be slapping on the sub frame, and the gearbox moving in and out with the bush being worn! I would replace this even if you just a get a Original one, but the Polly one is best :)

Speedo could be the wires on the unit, unplug and put soem wd40 on the plug, if not there is a speedo driver on the ebay for £5 now!!! Its all electronic and may be if ther eis so much movement on the engine the wire may simply be pulling its self out ;)

Just had the car into yet another garage concerning the knocking noise and they're saying it's not the engine mounts as they all look new underneath. They don't know what it is and have advised me to either take it to Renault or another garage for yet another opinion! Unreal . . .

I don't want to pay out daft prices where Renault is concerned for a 9 year old car that's only worth £2k max! Don't suppose anyone knows of a local specialist or a decent garage in the North East or Northumberland region I can take it to? Even if I could identify the problem, it would be a start . . .

Should also say, it seems to knock underneath when I take my foot off the clutch hard, after changing gear . . . it doesn't knock when I ease off the clutch gently! Don't know if this is a clue as to what it could be??

My cup had this after Reno had played with my car, it is the mount under the car, they replace all mounts and all was good.

Ah right, cheers pal.

Don't suppose you know what mount it is exactly (what it's called) . . . just so I can go to a garage and tell them what to look for?

Cheers.

It is just called the dog bone mount only one there that's why it happens also check the space one the nut on the top left mount next to the cam belt mine was chapping when accelerating, that was the original fault.
