172 Megane Coupe Conversion

  Fiesta ST-3
Well bought my Megane Phase 2 1.6 16V about a year and abit ago and after a some modification it now looks like this.

coupeclubmidlandsmeet2008039800x600.jpg

Its the one on the left btw :p

Shes loverD 40 mil all round on some kei racing force tens in gunmetal grey. Also fitted with some angel eyes and a custom decal kit copied from the Megane f1 edition.

Anyways bought myself a clio 172 phase 1 engine on 32K from just renaults which im still waiting to arrive....

Im planning on the car being more of a sleeper look and keeping the 1.6 badges on etc, not really a track car. But who knows.

Bought the phase 1 engine due to the phase two being abit more awkward to fit. Luckly for me the clio engine drops straight in on the coupe mounts so no messing there. The only things i will need are new gear box, ecu and loom. The engine i bought comes with clutch and flywheel so again no messing there. There may be a few other things i need but those will be found as we go.

So first things first needed to get the engine out.

So we set off from my house and arrived early morning to my mates farm place ready for him and another mate to take the engine out...car reversed into the garage and the work began

So finally got the engine out. Struggled with the drive shafts as they were buggers and the down pipe was a b**ch but after abit of play she came out sweet as a nut.

Just a quick pic of us lads warming up as it was fecking freezing. I can be seen wearing my warm fleese and gloves :D and a massive thank you to Leigh in the jcb overalls for doing all the hard work :p

And the car now wrapped up and waiting for the new engine to arrive

So whats next. Clio engine in. But before shes in, going to change aux belt, cam belt and tentioners. Also considering upgrading the pullies too whilst the engines out.
I also need to purchase an ecu and loom and get the ecu decoded.
Purchase some colies
Upgrade breaks
Paint engine block
Refurb alloys that arnt in pictures.

More to follow soon.

nice i knew it would not be long before someone done this should shock a few people at the lights . lose the sticker on the bumper tho

  tiTTy & SV650
good idea it derserved the engine from the start. They did a crappy 2.0 unit didn't they?

Good effort, they look mint on 172 / 182 wheels too

Nice project, but tbh I'd of just opted for a 172, looks better etc.

Good luck anyway mate.

  Fiesta ST-3
Yea they did the phase 1 f7r engine 2.0 16v but frankly thats just too old. Hard to find one with low milage. And the IDE is a phase 2 engine but notorious for its problems and lack of solutions for the problems.

This will be a niceee car when done, please keep us updated :D

Lovin' the lights :approve:

Deserves to be in this section TBF. Clio engine into another Renault!

Good luck with it :) Older megane definitely deserved this engine, but you'll have mroe weight :p

  Fiesta ST-3
Yea im not looking for the power of the clio :p more the one off of putting it in the coupe. Few more parts have arrived. Will post more pictures soon.

  Fiesta ST-3
Right so only a slight update. Parts have started arrving. First was the engine block. 172 Phase one on 32k. I only got the block which was a little disapointing and has set thing back abit but thats what i got and have to live with it.

So there it is, engine block including clutch and flywheel. Cleaning her up first to get all the crap off. Considering painting the block to help spot oit leaks but not too sure yet.

Cleaning has finished now and all surface rust has been removed. Any suggestions on a colour for the block?

Next purchase so far was the inlet manifold upper and lower including cable throttle bodie. Also i bought fuel rail and injectors.

Going to polish the manifold up to a nice chrome eventually.

My biggest set back was the fact that i only got the block so i am now having to source absaloutly everything. Must say a big thank you to renault specialists. They have been tip top so far and would recomend them to anyone. Im just wondering what parts perhaps i could take from my 1.6 16v engine such as alternator and starter motor etc???

More updates to follow.

Also today ive just finished fitting the new Cambelt and tensioners, water pump and have an aux belt too. Getting some gaskets to fit the manifolds i have tomorrow. This time next week the engine should be fitted. I have decided to use the gearbox off my old car as it fits fine.

Exhaust manifold was picked up for a steal at £10.50. I hope it fits on ok without much tinkering.

So i have colourd hoses on order :p so cant wait for them. Need to get the gaskets and fit all my ancilories and manifolds. Then the box and hopfully she will be in but not running this time next week.

Updates to follow!!

Right time to bring this thread back to life a little.

Got rather alot done so i will try and remember to put it all in. We started by putting a few more bits on the engine. Water pump is now on and the cam cover too. We also fitted the mounts into the relavant places.

So up on the crane she went and ready to drop into place.

We were worried at fiirst as wether or not the engine would fall into the bay nicley and sit on the mounts. But in she was lowerd to see.

Photo0064.jpg

Once the mounts were lined up the block was then bolted in and fits just snug.

Photo0065.jpg

Photo0063.jpg

Just a trial fit of the top inlet, this is without the lower inlet on.

Photo0071.jpg

The next thing was to reconnect the gear linkage and put the shafts into the box.

Photo0068.jpg

After the car being on axle stands for 6 week it was time to stick the wheels back on and take her off.

Photo0077.jpg

Photo0079.jpg

Also fitted the lower part of the manifold and gasket.

Photo0078.jpg

And now the upper part with TB

Photo0072.jpg

We had to use a digger to tow the car to unseize the callipars from the disks and also lift up the front so leigh could cut my cat off too.

Photo0081.jpg

Photo0083.jpg

And finally the best engine shot i have so far

Photo0080.jpg

Now all thats left is the wiring, cooling system and sort the exhaust out.

  Fiesta ST-3
Not a huge update but ive been working on my engine cover the last two weeks so hear is the almost finished look.

Photo0114.jpg

And here is the oil cap cover. This is needs to be laquerd still but currently waiting to hear back from Savage on some stencils that will go on there

Right i also have orderd some coilies :D A custom decat from that Liam lad, Ecu has been decoded and did all this...

Im well chuffed after todays advances. Weather was mint so we got cracking.

So what we did. We planned to have the engine running today but with some difficulties this never happend. We managed to

Replace the oil filter
Change all the spark plugs
Fit the inlet manifold and HT leads

We also managed to fit the alternator bracket, power steering bracket, the aircon pump, alternator and power steering. We are just missing a few bits and pieces to get the whole Aux belt working. And we also fitted loom and conected the throttle cable so things are really starting to take shape now.

Really not much left to do. Looking to have it running in the next few weeks. I cant wait. Got a few pictures, but they will be thin on the ground now as im trying to get it finished before i show how its totally looking.

But heres a sneek peek ;)

The inlet isnt finished yet but can be finished up on the car.

All we have left is

Fit Decat
Sort plumbing
Wire in the Looms
Finish Aux Belt

  172 Cup
Loving this thread mate, love the look of your car and what you are doing to it. Looking forward to seeing the final pics.

Will
:)

Thanks chaps, much apprechiated. And i must admit the car does deserve the engine. It has a cracking engine in the F7R but finding a young aged one of them in good nick is hard to come by. And if im honest looks no where nears as sexual as the RS.

  Fiesta ST-3
So today was work on car day again. The car now looks like a car once again. Got a fair bit done. We managed to fit the radiator, slam pannel, coolant hoses and also took the scuttle panel off to look at some wiring. We also fitted the head lights back in and bumper on. The bonnet is also back on and lined up.

We also fitted new injectors and the fuel rail guard that is half polished.

Still waiting on my coilovers and decat. Also trying to purchase the top bracket for the alternator.
