172 mpg better than 1.2

  172 mk2
just done a 170 mile trip round the m25 and the M1, done it many times in my 172 and can get 40mpg

did it earlier tonight in a coutersy car 1.2 16v extreme 4 (nice tho) and only got 37.8 mpg...

just drove the same, was at around 70-80 most of the way..

any reason for this, thought the 1.2 would be loads better than the 2.0l

p.s. the 80 was on my private airfield that runs near the M1..

1.2 may be alittle more stressed at that speeds then a 172.

lol at the the 80 was on my private airfield that runs near the M1..

I drove down to exeter and back over the weekend (200 miles) in my 172 and managed to get 35.3mpg.....not sure if this is okay or not (I have Green panel and sports cat fitted).

  182
Did a long motorway drive yesterday and averaged 40.5 in my 1.2. Noticed quite a big drop doing 80 over 70.

There were a few threads a while back with compliants of the 1.2's figures. 30pg was the norm really, nothing that special. How many revs is the 172 doing at say, 80mph? That's the difference i think.

I normally get about 41mpg in my 172 driving at 80mph over 80 motorway miles.

A normal drive around 32 - 34mpg, which is really good, when my mate's Golf 1.8T is slower and only gets 27mpg.

Dont think the revs are any different 5th gear on most cars is usually set to do around 20mph per 1000rpm. the 1.2 was like that at 70 - 80 did 3500-4000rpm when i had one.

There just not that good on fuel.

Same here, I came from an Alfa GTV 3.0 v6 and that used to give me 22-26 mpg with similar performance. But the little clios really do surprise.

All good news I suppose!

Those Golf GTI turbo units just luv a bit of fuel! alright on a long tour but in stop / start town stuff they are dreadful.

How did you get 41mpg out of your 172.....has it got quite a few miles on?

  a burnt one
at 80mph my 1.2 revs at a just a ball hair over 4000rpm, fuel economy for me is rubbish as most of my driving is done on motorways and i refuse to stick to speed limits, sorry any watching bobby's!!:rasp:

how big is the tank in a 1.2 16v (mk2 ph1)? i get in the region of 400 miles out of a tank but never done a calc to work out mpg.

the 1.2/1.4/1.6's arent really geared towards going fast for long periods

my 1.6 is revving at about 3.5k at 70 so it does tend to use a fair bit of fuel.
on the drive to london (120 odd miles) this weekend i got 54mpg going down the motorway (averaging about 65mph)

My girlfriend got 43mpg in our mk2 172 going to Bristol and back today, which i think is pretty good.

We used to spend about the same sort of money when we had a 1.3 Fiesta, i think thats because you had to floor it to get anywhere whereas the 2.0 clio takes it in it's stride.

when i bought my 1.2 (from a lady owner) it was doing 41 mpg....now i struggle to get 35mpg....hmm mebbe i should change before that redline thingmibob.....strange tho, it costs me around £37 to fill up and other people in exactly the same car from empty claim to be full at about £34.....

in all fairness though for a 1.2 the clio still isnt that bad of a car. cheap and cheerful and for a wee engine doesnt make too bad of a noise.

still sold mine after a year of driving it like.

really wanted a 172 / 182 until i got an insurance quote still now trying to get one less than £3000 is impossible due to where i live.

how can you work out mpg if you dont have a fancy computer?
Fill the tank to the brim (takes some time) reset the trip computer then nest time you fill up fill it to the brim and then divide the amoutn of fuel you put in by 4.5461 to find out how many liters you've burned and divinde the milage by this number
I.E. 45 liters in the tank is approx 10 gallons which say you've traveled 340 miles means you've got 340/ 10 = 34mpg.
