** 172 NEWSFLASH **

  172 Cup

Popped in to our dealer this afternoon to check on the progress of our 172 order. Hooray, the car is at Le Harve waiting to catch the ferry and I will be able to collect it before the weekend of the 17th.

As we were leaving he picked up a piece of paper and said "Oh and here is a bit of news for you" and then showed me the memo dated the 6th October .

It read: "As of the end of this week Renault will be

stopping production of the 172,

Renault will however, still continue to produce the 172 cup untill further notice."

He said that any orders placed this week would be honoured but as of Mon no new orders for 172s will be taken! Only Cups

There should still be a few 172s about, Eastbourne has 2 blue 172s available at the mo.

Would one of our Renault Staff members like to shed a little light on this, please.

lol I think there would be more than a weeks notice. And why would renno stop making the 172 before the new range comes out in 2005? Dont make sense.

jonnyboy - Renault must have decided that they make more money on the 172 cup.

As for the week notice issue - I remember back in 2000 when the dealers were only given a weeks notice with regards to the changes to the length of their warranties.

We will have to wait & see if this turns out to be fiction or fact

But the Cup ends production in November too, so is that gonna be it???

No more Clio Sports?!

Oh hang on..... this has just clicked!

both of these are stopping, and Renault are going to bring in the 180, betcha!

Isnt Reno bringing out the Phase 3 (180BHP) to compete with the new Pug 206 (also 180BHP)? If you are going to order a new Clio Id wait till the new one comes out, has twin exhaust, new wheels and minor facelift! OH, and dont forget the extra 8BHP

I thought they were only gonna make the Cup anyway, but with a list of options, so you can add these to make what is the current 172...at extra cost, no doubt

Got a trip to Renault next week for ANOTHER head light washer ball, so Ill ask them....just rang them and the bloke said "oh, is this Mrs Jones again" dont know if thats good customer service or what???!!!!

Something I read said that the Cup has far exceeded sales expectations, with Renault originally only expecting a small hardcore of drivers to want something as Old School and raw as the Cup, and subsequently this has led to the decision to stop production of the less popular 172.

Rubbish.

If that was the case then production of the cup would be continuing too.

it stops next month.

Yes it has

but if you work out the amount of cups sold since its been out an compare it to 172 sales..............

does this mean all Clio 172s and all Cups will stop working the moment productions ends? I think that we should be told.

I feel the Cup is more of a marketing ploy than anything else........

.........The Megan RS will be the heavy, well equiped and powerful hatch will take over the mantle of the hot hatch from the 172/Cup to compete with the likes of the Focus RS, R32, Alfa GTAs etc. Phase out the standard 172 and offer the Cup with A/C, leather seats, xenons etc as expensive options. Well done Renault for coming up with a great money spinner. IMO of course.
This news confirms what I always thought........

Im sorry but every model is a marketing ploy in some way.

The Rs will be good, its not heavy.

Renault wont do that with the cup and thats not my opinion its a fact.

The return of the clio flagship will happen sooner rather than later.

(and im not talking about the v6 thats a seperate entity)

  172 Cup

Just been back down to our dealer who has clarified one point, the cup will be continued untill the end of its life the dealer thinks this will be when the new clio arrives in late 04 early 05.

This will bring the clio inline with other Renault models where you buy a specific model and the rest is options that you have to pay extra for.

Again total rubbish spoken by your dealer.

Cup production ends next month.

New clio isnt due until 2005

None of this late 04 rubbish.

Tomclio16V,

How do you know for sure that Cup production stops next month?

If they stop both the 172 and the Cup, then there will be no top spec Clio for at least 12 months. This cant be right, surely?
