172 or 182...sleeper required!

Im currently driving a 2003 1.2 16V Dynamique in lovely Pearl Black and I will soon be replacing it.

Very keen on a 172 or 182 but not sure what to be aim for, whatever I go for it has to be Black, and more importantly Im very keen on owning a sleeper, something that looks bog-standard but shifts quite nicely. I guess Im the opposite to most people here, I prefer a car that looks quite innocent on the road but has what it counts under the bonnet, far more entertaining on the road. I work at a College too so having something that doesnt stand out is a huge bonus.

I will have the cash for a new 182 cup but the dual-tailpipes are putting me off of a bit, so I was thinking about saving a few quid and hunting down a low mileage 172. At least then the silver 2.0 door strips can come off, the RenaultSport logo can come off the back and the lack of visible tail-pipes makes it look pretty much identical to my current 1.2 from the back and sides.

Any advice or thoughts, or has anyone else "de-modified" a 172 before?!

Some guy has a CUP that he changed the silver door badges to balck 1.2 ones, I would think that would be enough. Welcome to the site.

Just seen I have been here just over a year now woooooo :)

most of us prefer subtle styling mods or none at all with a focus on suspension and engine revisions so youve come to the right place. for a real sleeper check this out http://www.modifiedcars.com/cars/11877.htmclicky

if you wanted to keep your current car so as not to have the 172 skirts and bumpers IIRC j3ned on here can do a 172 conversion for about £3K

The RenaultSport logo would have to come off, Im assuming this wouldnt be as easy as I hope!

Out of interest is it a specific model that comes with the 5-spokes (same as on my Dynamique)?

Renault sport logo is just a stick on badge, unlike the clio on which is pinned on to(leaves holes when removed)

The 172s an 182s have diff alloys to the rest, the new dynamiques have same alloy design as the 172s but they are 15", on the 172s they were 16". CUPs again have diff alloys from the rest. As loony says it all depends how much like a standard Clio you would want you 2.0L to look as the what needs doing.

the 04 model onwards comes with 15" version of the wheels fitted to 172s

Thanks for the advice, I dont want/need to entirely standardise it so I think I will hunt down a black 172 and remove the badges etc, that should be enough.

I dont understand why anyone would want a sleeper car that looks sh*t. (Like the one shown on modifiedcars.com.)

Its one thing taking a 172 and removing badges etc, but to make it look like a very low spec Clio. Total madness IMO.

Under the bonnet you may have a 172 engine, and yes you will leave everyone standing, but it just looks like a fast sh*t car. Sorry but I dont get it.

surely you like handing out an education to those who think their 318 rep wagon who think you are in a sh*tty 1.2 clio and have no idea you have 2.0 under the bonnet? well its the same principal but more so.

The point is to upset people in flash cars that think they have been beaten by a 1.4?

Isnt that the whole point of the 172/182? To look like a normal car but keep up with sports cars? All these people are doing is taking it a few steps further?

That Clio "1.2" is a brilliant car performance wise, and the last time I spoke to the owner, he was saying that hes thinking of putting in a VW 1.8 turbo engine from an Audi TT, etc., then hell get even more power from it.

I think that the Cup is a fairly subtle car for those not in the know, they see a Clio, and when it leaves them for dust and hands them their arse back on a plate, its the Clio driver who is smiling...its not in your face and the styling is just right.

*NOTE* Thats my opinion, please dont slate me for this ;)

donnyo - yep I Agree. Most (simple) people just see the 172/182 as a normal little Clio. Theres no need to change anything and make it look naff.

hes already well on the way with the TT engine conversion.
thats what i love about the 172/182 to most people in Beemrs and mercs etc you are seen as cannon fodder as they dont know what engine youve got under the bonnet, subtle styling with no massive vents bonnet buldges or arches. They have a pop at you and then you drop them leaving them looking stupid.

Maybe Ill borrow one of those crappy looking sleepers, just to annoy some of those BMW drivers. What is it about them. There always up my arse, trying to push me off the road.

Didnt you know, you need to get a brain bypass with every BMW, plus most seem to only have indicators as an option!!!!!

If they think youre in a slow car, then theyll tailgate you or try and get you out of their way (especially if the car is a rep mobile as they dont officially own it!) I tend to slow down a bit, then drop down a gear and leave them for dust...it makes me smile.

i either do that or move over when they sit right up your ass or flash you out of the way, then move straight back behind them and sit on their ass to return the favour. Then take great pleasure as the speed raises with them thinking they can drop you but they eventually have to bottle it and let me by, really puts them in their place.

Its not my intention to make it look rubbish. I happen to really like the look of my current 1.2 Dynamique (which incidently, is a damn nippy little machine, very few cars 1.4 or less that I would have to think twice about before shooting by). As other people have said, the 172/182 is a fantastic standard sleeper as it is, Im just taking this a little bit further.

I guess its all down to how comfortable you are driving a crap looking car, although I have no intention of going as far as that Clio shown, I think waving at a rep-mobile or boy racer as you pass them in something that looks like that would be highly entertaining. As I see it its far less pointless than taking a 1.2 Corsa or something then turning the damn thing into Ripspeed brochure, but that seems extremely common.

Well, theres a dude on here that does the 1.2 to 172 conversion for £1,500 and will source the parts too. That sounds like more of a sleeper to me and u did say you like your Clio! So keep it and drop a 172 engine it it! Or more ;)

ukaskew - I wasnt saying that other lower spec Clios were sh*t, just that one in particular. Its kind of insulting to stick a 172 engine into that thing.

Loony - Yeah I do the same thing sometimes, let the BMW driver pass and then sit on his ass, with my beam and fog lights switched on, waving my middle finger out the window, telling him what a f**king b**stard he is.:devilish:

lol, then watch what speed they get upto before they either bottle or run out of steam then indicate and move into the inside lane and think *in the words of rhys ifans on twin town* f**kIN DONE YA

Hopefully quite soom j3ned will print the guide on dropping a VAG 1.8T engine into a Clio. That should be quite cheap £4k I think hes paid for bits but its 270hp when mapped and upgradable to 350hp quite easy without new pistons and well the skys the limit with that engine 450hp is possible with a completly rebuilt spec.

A 172 engine and box suspension, UCH, keys, and ECU (ie everything you need for a conversion is £1.5k I think plus VAT he charges £4k drive in drive out though.

Fred should also have a Renault spec 2.0T engine dropped in for the same sort of price I think. Hes just got to finish his first.

and how is a front wheel drive clio gonna get down 450hp??

No point in standardising a 172 in my opinion, anyone who knows anything about clios will know it has 172 bodykit, flared arches etc, colour coded side strips... the list goes on. Also, if you really want a sleeper, why dont u get an old car, that could be made faster than a clio 172, cos to be fair theyre not exactly tunable compared to most things (especially with turbos). bottom line, get a standard 172/182 or something different. just my opinion though

  Clio 200 Cup

Ive seen ibizas with 360bhp from that VAG engine and they are just so impractical. It is impossible for them to get the power down even in 3rd gear. Great fun yes, but i say if youre prepared to spend £12k+ on the conversion in the first place, buy a non fwd car which will be able to take the power. 230bhp (with a KO3s turbo) is about the limit for that engine in fwd cars IMO.
