172 Speedo not working - tried lots to fix

Hi,

My 172 had its speedo fail whilst driving a few weeks ago. To fix it so far I've tried:

- Replacing gearbox speedo sensor
- Replaced instrument cluster
- Checked all fuses
- Replaced all relays
- Checked everything earths properly

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else it could be?

What exactly are the ABS rings and what impact could they have? I've been taking the car to the local expert who I bought it from so I'm not particularly mechanically savvy myself.

From what I've read, if I could get the car to read the speed from the ABS instead of the gearbox sensor then I may be right. Has anyone ever had any luck in doing so?

The local expert didnt run a diagnostic scan for you?

He checked it out with an RS Tuner which showed a speedo sensor fault. Cleared that and now it doesn't report any faults even though the speedo still isn't working.

hi mate, im having the same problem and my brothers mate ran my car throw the computer, also said the sensor, which it wasnt, then i got told it might be my clocks, fitted them and it still didnt worked

Ph2's take their speedo reading from the ABS sensors. Only the 172 Cup doesn't.

Get him to check the condition of the rings.

what about a ph1 1.2l?? would that be from the ABS sensors too??

Early ph2s don't seem to (I'm in Australia so may be different here). It still has the gearbox speedo sensor - why would it have that if it didn't use it?

Having said that I'm certainly willing to try everything so how do I check the rings?

Oh well, since there seem to be no answers I've had to resort to a ghetto mod in its place:

If anyone has any other ideas as to why it's not working I'd be glad to hear them! The ABS rings theory seems to be out as a local Clio owner has tried comprehensively to find a link from the ABS sensor on gearbox speedo sensor equipped Clios using a CAN Clip and can't find anything there.
