172 to 182 engine questions

can i use a complete 182 engine, head and block, and bolt all the parts off my phase 1 172 engine to it to get it to run in the car? likely to be any issues with mapping etc of be fine on 172 management?

are all the sensors same etc?

any input much appreciated

rocker cover is different and might not accept a phs1 plenum, apart from that, same same

is that a definate wont fit or most likely wont fit? presume its just the upper plenum, lower part is same on all 3 engines? phase 1 172. phase 2 and 182?

all 3 plenums are different and model specifc

ph1 and phs2 172 plenum both fit the phs1+2 engines (both fit both engines)

182 only fits 182

you can swap the rocker covers contary to popular belief

you can swap them? so they arent matched to the head like the cam carriers on the earlier F7 series of engines? is that a definate? as if it is i'll just get the 182 lump and bolt the cam cover off the phase 1 lump over as well

they are line honed (rocker cover IS the cam carrier on the F4R), but i've done it before without issue, someone will be along in a minute and call me the anti-christ for suggesting it, but its fine, i would say modern day machining tolerances are fairly accurate

i've swapped a rocker cover. Had to have it re-honed at quite a large cost as the cams locked up once the bolts were torqued. Wont be doing that again, fine in theory, but just a bit of a pain to sort out in a cost effective manner.

182 plenum fits 172 head fine BTW

Ah, found this thread I've been looking for, apologies for bringing up an old topic, could I just confirm that the 172 plenum won't fit the 182 rocker cover?

To cut a long story short, my ph1 came to a halt the other day and there's zero compression on any cylinder. So think a replacement engine is the order of the day. Unfortunately I was a bit ham fisted and smashed the corner off my rocker cover the other day when I leapt in and tried to strip it off. So if possible I wanted to get a 182 engine and fit all my bits and bobs to it - is it possible?
