172 Turbo Conversion

Am thinking of ordering the M B PERFORMANCE turbo kit. I am thinking of getting some of the parts myself i.e. the intercooler, turbo via ebay or scrappy. These are the two kits you could buy, im thinking option 2.

Kit 1 contains:

turbocharger
manifold
intercooler

Piping, airfilter, oilfeed oildrain new ECU program and so on has to be
made by yourself. Version 1 is a very basic set.

Kit 2 contains

turbocharger
manifold
intercooler
oilfeed turbo
oildrain turbo
ECU remap
Knock controller (seperate ECU)
extra fuel injector
fuelinjector housing
new fuel rail
fuel lines
downpipe

piping intercooler, airfilter, heatschields onewayvalves have to be made
by yourself.

Sorry what are one way valves anyone want to point me in the right direction.

thank you

You may be better getting someone who knows what they're doing to turbo your clio. Save you a lot of grief in the long term. K Tec seem to be the only contender.

Kit 1 seems to just make things difficult, the turbo and intercooler can be had no problem and a couple of places will do you a manifold, it's all the stuff they don't include in kit 1 that's a pain to get I'd have thought.

I am fully aware of K Tec’s quality and workmanship I couldn’t fault them from the £5,000 plus I have spent with them but it shouldn’t mean any other companies are any less capable of producing a high end quality product.

Thank you for those who attempted to actually answer the question.

Anymore help would be much appreciated.

one way valves anyone??????

The K-tec & MB kit are very different. Where as the K-tec kit is a high boost, high power kit requiring complete overhaul of the engine, the MB kit is a low boost (8-9 psi) cost effective kit based on stock engine internals.
Both kits run (or use part) of my ECU calibrations.

kit 2 mate! iv just put two T25 on my E30, and had to redo all the oil feeds, pipe work etc, and it was so time consuming and if you cant do it yourself the hours would quickly rack up on a bill....

for ease of fitment do ver 2, plus if anythign does go wrong you can atleast have a leg to stand on!

no, there's so many variables it's unreal. Housings and core alignment is fully rotatable on almost all turbos though (a few have a tab to stop rotation but that can be cut off) a GT28R 0.64 A/R (ball bearing core) for a 200sx fitment is good for enough air for ~300bhp with the right supporting mods

They are not seriously selling this kit without an oil cooler are they??

/slash expecting people to run boost and no oil cooler? I'm considering an oil cooler for my largeley standard setup

I hate to say this mate but you really need to do some more reading with regards to turbo conversions before you get your wallet out.

Turbos are driven by the flow of exhaust gas (hence need for new manifold). Exhaust gas is HOT. This makes the whole turbo hot. The compressor side (non rusty) blows air but makes it much much hotter.
The purpose of an intercooler (FMIC-front mounted intercooler) is to cool the air before it goes into the inlet manifold. This A) makes the air denser (can add more fuel to it) and B) avoids detonation.
An OIL cooler IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING. It cools oil. A turbo sometimes spins up to 100,000RPM which makes it farking hot. It needs oil which it takes from the engine. The oil gets much to hot and extra cooling for the oil is required.

See blatant oil cooler mounted in the front of this car. Not a turbo, just driven hard, hence oil hotter, hence oil cooler needed.

one way valves anyone??????

The brake system is powered from the suction in the inlet manifold. With a turbo you run positive pressure and this needs to be stopped from meeting the master cylinder. The one way valve does that

Turbo conversions are massive job if you have never done anything like this before.

The guy who built mine took over two years, but runs sweet as a nut now.

My conversion is a low boost low comp, good for 250bhp. Im only running about 8psi boost (200bhp) now as a precaution and make the clutch gear box last.

On a track day the boost goes up to 10psi (220bhp).
