182 Cats - more than 1 variant?

Car  Clio 182
Looks like I need to replace the cat on my 182. So I've been weighing up options this evening to see about maybe getting a genuine one 2nd hand. However, mine looks like this:

and the majority I've found look like:

Can anyone explain what's going on?

Cheers,

Mark

First one is a non-gen "sport" CAT and the second is an original Renault CAT

Thanks. Non-gen as in "to be avoided"? Which would probably explain why mine needs replacing I suppose

chances are it's a 200 cell cat, you may well struggle to get it through an mot to say the least;)

ah well. i've got a 182 cat that i used for mot if you're interested in it? can sell it or do a 'rental' on it if you are interested.

Top one looks like a Ktec one. I've got a 200 cell Ktec cat for my 182 manifold to 172 exhaust and it passes the MOT fine (mine also has cams and ITBs), just warm the car up first then take it.

Good spot, it does indeed: http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=1265&appid=2 Given the lack of any previous upgrades it'd be a bit of a surprise if it was, but then again I do have a k-tec exhaust from the cat back. That complicates things a bit - don't like 'downgrading'!

I'd say it probably won't function any better than a standard one, they are both sport cats. So if the Ktec one doesn't work then you won't notice putting a standard one back on :)

Are you sure the cat isn't working? You might have a different problem, I.E faulty lambda, faulty injector etc.

Yeah it is looking like the cat at fault. Had an intermittent lambda error coming up for ages, stupidly just replaced it now so that's sorted but the emissions are still up. Car is still runs very well, no signs of anything else at all so the garage is recommending the cat goes. It's SWR in Stirling that I'm using, so I definitely trust what they're saying.

Forgot to mention that the car was definitely running rich, so that's probably what's goosed the cat

but but but the magic k-tec rolling road says "+5bhp" ;)

A lot of people go aftermarket or cheap due to the fact that the price of a new OE CAT is crazy
