182 cup set-up on 172 bug eye??

  200 Cup
HI, My friend has got a ph2 Mk1 172, he wants to put the 182 cup springs and dampers on it.
Does anyone know if it is a direct replacement? If not, can anything else be recommended i.e. Koni etc

Cheers Nick

182 cup front suspension won't go on. They have 60mm hole spacing where as 172's and non cup'd 182's are 54mm.

If your refering to a PH1 172. Please never call it a bug eye. Its not a scooby.

So does a 182 ff with cup Pack (suspension) have the same front strut and hub as the cup or ff?
So that must make it a Mk2 Ph1 172 then. What about a frog eye as it is french??

Why does he want to do it surely it would be easier to buy a decent set of coilovers, and theres more benefit.

Well, no need for *****ing around setting the corner weights and heights up, last a lot longer (as a cheap set of coilovers are cheap for a reason, decent set is towards £1000-£2000), cup set-up is good all-round and has been designed for that purpose.

As has the normal 172 sus;)
Best bet would be to stick some Eibach Pro or Sportline springs on and leave the dampers as they are.

Seconded. The Eibach sportlines I have on mine have improved the car 10 fold for me.

Lol no, the OEM rear shocks are well know for being bad.

Do you not think they developed the 172 suspension. Seems like alot of work for little gains.

As said Spotlines/prolines are decent with some up uprated shocks.

I have owned a Ph1 172, and now a 182 with cup packs. I tried standard, Apex, PI, K-tec, Eibach Pro's and Eibach Sportline springs on the 172... The car was driven hard on both road and track. The best? OEM shocks with Eibach Proline springs.

If I was to compare the Ph1 172 setup, with my current 182 Cup setup... I would say it the 172 shocks with Eibach Sportlines feel very close to the 182 Cup suspension.

LOL! I'm sure Renault did do some development on the PH1 172. Just like they did some development with the PH1 V6 Clio, However, It had changed alot by the time the PH2 came out for one reason or another (complaints from widdows of former V6 owners).
I've owned a Ph2 172 and frequently used a 182 ff with cup pack (suspension), I reckon the 182 handled better.

The cars current suspension is tired, so he's gonna replace it all anyway, Thanks for your advice and comments.

just for reference, the term 182ff means it has cup packs. so its just 182ff, not 182ff with cup packs. people will be along soon to tell u off some more lol.
as you say the suspension on the ph1 is tired. so a refresh with standard shocks will make a huge differece to the feel of the car especially handling. alot of people off here change just the springs on the cup suspension and report good things. i would say keep to a new set of the standard shocks and just upgrade th springs. and as already mentioned the 182 cup suspension wont fit neway.

I thought FF meant Full fat i.e non cup and then as a new car you could spec the cup pack - suspension upgrade or Cup pack - larger rear spoiler etc.??

Little knowledge is dangerous, so don't dispense it.
