182 Engine Ticking, Tapping

  Clio 182 2005
Hi ive done a search but didnt really come up with anything which is the same case as mine.

Ive noticed my engine is ticking quite loudly.

Ive checked all the plugs are done up tight, just had oil and filter and has right amount of oil in it.

It basically sounds similar to a small diesel tapping.

It only does this on tick over as soon as you rev above a certain rpm it stops completely and sounds sweet.

Its done 55k and i have been assured by the previous owner the belt has been done although I do not know if the dephaser pulley was also changed at this time.

Does this sound like dephaser pulley or something else.

My friend reckons its the hydraulic lifters?

Thanks Paul

considering people say the dephasers never go wrong or whatever, there has been an awful lot that do this. mine was the same. and there are loads on here that have sorted the problem by changing the dephaser.

See my mate who has had plenty of clio sports last night and said can you hear that sound.... and before i could finish my sentence he said 'dephaser, went on my one'

Doesnt sound like that at all. It doesn't sound as nockey or as low pitch as the sound in the video. It sounds like the tappets on a old fiesta but as soon as i give it a little bit of throttle it stops completely.

Normally they don't sound that bad, just diesel ish (Another lad on here had one that was a dead ringer for a transit)

only uneducated fools think dephasers don't go wrong, its one of the most common failures i see

They do get noisy, just the issue has got worse recently as people aren't servicing the cars properly/often enough

Ouch.

How much is the part?
What is involved in fitting?
New belts?

dephaser is cira £165 (HAVE TO do an oil and filter change too)
so call it £200 for that on top of cambelt kit and aux belt kit and labour - specialists are all "around" £450 for that

I'm getting a new alternator fitted this weekend as well as Oil change, Gearbox oil change and plugs fitted so trying to figure out whether I should try and speak with the guy about doing this at the same time.

Could also get the depahser trade price as he works for a Ford Dealeship so could order it through them.

Is it something that completely fails at some point or just gets noisier?

you need all the renault tools to do it also (and knowing you arse from your elbow with the F4R engine is a must) ie - go to a specialist

OK well thats cleared up then.

Best get that sorted by a Renault Tech Friend at some point then as he did all the belts for me so has all the timing tools etc.

Thanks for the info Fred.

i to have this problem with my clio. Comes in only at tick over.

are the dephasers available at motor factors or just Renault.

Is it a simple job in respect? time length?

Any detriment to the engines power if the dephaser is on it's way out? I know roughly how it works but could it mess the timing/knacker the engine?

When your dephaser is knackered you are affectively "freewheeling" between a 0 to 16 degree advanced state and anywhere inbetween.

WHen the engine is under load though i expect tension will keep it in one state, but at idle it will flap about hence the tractor noise.

Can this cause damage if not erected straight away, or is it a simple case of how long you can stick the " ticking ". Are they available at renault only or factors ?

Can anyone recomend a specialist for a belts / dephaser replacement in the surrey area?
Mine too is sounding like a diesel when hot !!
