They are basically the same engine, and yes it will fit in a mk2 ph1. The bodyshells are practically identical throughout the range.

Electronic pedal would be easier!Whats the deal with the belts as there will be no aircon etc and the fuel lines?

Simplest thing to do is use a ph1 engine and ECU and match the engine loom to the car's loom.

not a 172 no. i dont know which ph1. an rn or nethin really. is changing it to cable throttle difficult? and why cant the car just use an electronic throttle if im using the ecu and wiring loom from the 182?

You can use an electronic throttle!you will have to swap all the looms over which i thought had to be done anyway :S
Now are we buying a car or doing it to mine and fuckin it up lol?

yeh new project! thinking of getting a cheap mk2 stripping it out and putting in a 2.0 lump. ive found a 182 one so was wondering if that could be done. it comes with the looms so i dont see the problem with the electronic throttle

There no easy answer if it were me I'd get a phase 1 looms and swop all the wiring for the phase 1 and use the 182 engine and get a Cup belt system so you can run the simple aux belt setup.

But there loads of ways round the issues.
