182 FF or basic ish 197?

  Red 197 & Laguna S-T
I'm having trouble finding the right 182, i want a certain colour, low mileage, mint condition, FSH, 05 or 55 reg etc etc (You get the idea). I'm willing to pay about 9k for the right one...

But...

I had a look at a 197 today 56 reg, hasn't got all the bells and whistles on but does have Climate control and Cruise Control and as far as i'm aware it hasnt got xenons. The car was priced at £10,250.

I don't mind stretching a little bit to pay for the 197, but i'm stuck on what to do.

What would you do??

I'd go for the 197 personally.

When you see them beside the 182, they make them look outdated - they look the nuts in racing blue as well.

The one i viewed was in red. Would you say the one i described to you is a low spec one?

cruise control/speed limiter is standard on all 197's, likewise keyless entry, air con, electric mirrors, foglights, cd player.... errrr... thats about it iirc.

so it is a standard one then? no other extras on it. it has the silver wheels too

What other extras could you have on it?

it has climate control which is extra cost. they come standard with air con, not climate.

loads of extras tbh. check www.renaultsport.co.uk and click on the cars bit at the top to see the specs.

197 for me, I wouldn't go 182 -> 197 but buying fresh I can't see the point as it stands to buy the 182.

get a 197 if you can afford the increased running costs over a 182, well worth the extra IMO

Is it a big difference? It won't be used everyday anyway, so running costs are not a huge problem.

The reason i was thinking 197 over the 182 is: you will still have Renault warranty on it, it doesn't have to be MOTed for quite a while and it is a more modern looking car...even though i still like the look of the 182.

Have to admit I am in agreement on how dated the 182 now looks compared to the 197 - The 182 is a fantastic car (I owned one for 2 and a half years) but for an extra grand then you'd be a fool not to go for the 197.

The increased running costs are minimal, Im averaging 29.1mpg round town and my friends 172 is averaging 32mpg round town so not a huge difference, the tax is obviously the same and the insurance on the 197 is actually cheaper than the 182 or atleast it was for my quotes as the 197 is 'only' group 15 where as the 182 is group 16...

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
personally i'd say 197, and those one in parks motherwell are nice, but the red one i think is just a 197 (56 iirc) unless its a different one. the RB they had was goregeous, they had it tin the showroom when we were getting my wee bros car, i couldnt stop looking at it. its alot nicer in that colour than the 182 IMO. Parks seem to get RS's in quite alot, not many but often if you know what i mean.

+1

Definately go for the 197 if you can, it's a better car. period.

get a 197 its a newer safer car and certainley as nice as the 182 is there ten a penny now there in the £6k bracket and there pertty discreet.

with the 197 you could space it, lower it. get some decals etc.. make it look mint.

even a bogo version (no offence gaz) would look like this..

197 for me

Personally id not want to spend in excess of 8 grand on a Clio, which a) isnt brand new or b) isnt the latest model

just my opinion, £9,000 is alot of money for a 3 year old Clio regardless of mileage

no they dont, i went to renault bolton, they had a 197rb i parked next to it and to be honest mine looked better so:rasp: lol,

either get a trophy or save more and get a v6.......

  Tiger R6 / Saxo Vts
I'd prob get a slightly older cheaper 182 ff personally and put some coilovers on it, or get a trophy. While a lot of reviews say the 197 handles really well and has more grip then the 182 - Evo tested the trophy and the 197 on track and the trophy pipped it so there really is very little difference between the 2.

The 182 is smaller and lighter so it most likely feels faster- that can only be a good thing in this age of speed cameras etc etc? I looked at a Civic type R and the 182 and picked the Clio for that reason - although the type r is marginally quicker it didn't feel it.

Each to there own. I've driven the options you're looking at, but you may want different things from a car. Asking people's opinion on here is a waste of time. You won't get an honest unbiased opinion, the 197 owners will tell you to get a 197, the Trophy owners tell you to get the Trophy. Go for a decent drive in all the options, then make your mind up.

i'm not interested in modifying it, i like them kept standard.

I've driven a 182 so now i've got to test drive the 197 and see what i think of it. Going to look at the red 197 again on Saturday and take my dad with me to see what he thinks.
