182 front pads- cold bite, no track use

The M1144 take some beating for their cost really in the 172/182 front pad shape. As you know I can supply those, and lots of other brake manufacturers so always worth asking, TRW not a problem (y)

Assuming the pads performance stays constant over their life, I'm very happy with the change to TRW.

Only been on a couple of weeks but there's a massive difference in cold and maximum performance. Honestly can't remember the last time I was able to activate the ABS in the dry on good tyres.

What's the latest on pads? Are TRW still a safe bet for what I've previously described?

Will need front discs and pads due to corrosion on the inside of the disc which probably goes a long way to explain why I no longer have much 'bite' when pushing the brakes hard.
 
On my road going Clio 182s I’ve used the following:

Cheap Motrio equivalent - awful pads, zero bite and when it rains or go through a puddle of water, you have zero brakes.

Brembo - better than the above but still poor in the wet and not great from cold.

Brembo Sport/Plus ( HP2000) - a bit more bite from cold but not worth the extra money.

Ferodo DS2500 - currently using these and they’re great. Work well in wet and dry weather. Decent bite from cold. Very hard wearing. Not overly dusty.

I’d never go on a trackday with any of these other than stick the DS2500 in the rear and they’ll last forever.

I had trw road pads in my old kangoo 172, rated them. Done a couple of trackdays on them pretty good considering.

I've done some digging on this as I also need some pads for my XKR and there's a thread on the Jaguar forum which details pad friction ratings-

I won't go in to the research steps but it involved a lot of internet searches for photos of pads! However, the conclusion is that in the US it is becoming the norm to provide guidance on the friction of pads when cold and hot (look up DOT edge codes if you are interested). Very ordinary pads seem to be EE rated. The best non-carbon-ceramic pads seem to top out at GG.

FF 0.35 to 0.45 both temps 0-22% fade at 600 F possible
GG 0.45 to 0.55 Very Rare

HH 0.55 to 0.65 Carbon/Carbon only. O.K. up to 3000 F where it glows

Long story short, I've gone with Delphi pads from autodoc (https://www.autodoc.co.uk/delphi/1762993) which have a GG rating so I'm looking forward to trying them-

The friction levels are interesting - theres no industry standard for measuring so generally the rule of thumb is you can compare products within a range ie - all Mintex, but when comparing brands you can only have a guide using the friction curve to assess how the pad will behave at certain temperatures. You end up having to test pads yourself to get its friction level vs another brand which is rather expensive.
Basically the test rigs have no set clamping force, line length, disc size or standardisation in many other variables.
Take the R90 compliance standard which is for standard pads. Its great in theory but the aftermarket manufacturer has to be within + or -15% of the original pad. Thats a 30% variable. +15% gets you products like Brembo HP2 and Ferodo DS Performance but OEM spec pads will never perform at the sustained level of a proper performance pad. To really be great under sustained high temperature abuse you will need to push beyond that 15%.
