182 Numberplate bulb keeps burning out

JMR

Car  RB 182 Cup
Replaced the bulb a couple of months ago, and the renault 25-point check I had done flagged up that the number plate bulb had gone again.

When I changed it first time I went to the local autofactors and he told me what bulb I needed as there were no markings left on the original.

R10W 10W 12v bulb. Only a quid or so.
The bulb went completely black and mirror finished!

I replaced with a new one this morning and this looks very dull now as the top of the bulb has again gone black.
It seems to be running very hot, and I have cleaned all the contacts as well as I can on the bulb holder, as I am aware they tend to collect water and corrode.

Am I using the correct bulb?
The web sites selling these seem to agree saying 10w.
Although I read somewhere that they should be a R5W bulb.

Any help appreciated.
