182 Rev Limiter

  BMW 120i Sport

So the 182 has over 600 miles on it now, ive been gentle with it but i had been starting to open it up more often; letting it warm up and then taking it to 5000 rpm, sometimes letting it come on cam and throw me into the seat but not all the way to the redline.

Tonight, I figured id take it out for a ragging, but not above 60 (nice quiet dual carriageway) as the roads are still pretty greasy.

However, it seemed to bump into the rev limiter a little too soon - it looked like it did it about 6800 rpm or before 7000 rpm (before the red line for sure) - would this be right? I can only just manage to hit 60 mph (on speedo) in second gear, but I thought (judging by 0-60 vids) it would rev above 7000 rpm.

I found more here http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=2&TopicID=114485&SearchPagePosition=1&search=rev+limiter&searchMode=allwords&searchIn=Topic&forum=0&searchSort=dateDESC&ReturnPage=Search

Any 182ers have the same?

how long had you been driving it? if its not tottally warmed up (at least 15-20 mins) then a slightly lower rev limit is there to protect the engine

mine takes about 15 minutes to warm up and then my limiter is definitely over 7k revs, it is colder at the mo so does take up to 20 minutes some times.

Yep, it needs to be warmed up.

Bear in mind the oil temp takes longer to rise than the water temp (shown on the gauge) and its the oil temp that affects the limiter.

Ahhh, gotcha - im watching the water temp guage then because i was driving for a good ten minutes and the water temp was up at the middle.

Obviously need to let it warm up a little bit more. Ill take it for a good run, 20 minutes or so and then see what its like.

Any way to check the oil temp, or how do you know when its running optimal temperature?

or try hitting the limiter a few times, youll soon know whether its up to temperature or not!
