182 Tyres - No grip on almost full lock

  FF Arctic Blue 182
When almost on full lock my tyres seem to slip and then grip along the road instead of just grip. If I let go of the steering wheel then it pulls onto full lock by itself. I have check tyre pressures and they are both what they should be and it happens on both right and left. My mates does it too, is it normal? It just makes turning on full lock a slightly harder business lol

You shouldnt really be anywhere near full lock in normal driving, just parking. Probably why they slide, not really designed to go sideways down the road!

I'm never on near full lock when driving, just when turning in a tight spot it sorta edges straight forward as well as turning.

Ah right gotcha. Can vaugly remember someone asking before but cant remember what the reason fir it is, dont think its anything to be overly concerned about though.

ste_brough, this is happening in my 2004 172 too, I know exactly what you mean, when you are travelling around 1 or 2 mph on full lock, the steering shudders as if the outside wheel is losing grip and bouncing.

I was wondering if the 172 was already fitted with an LSD too, does anyone know? I've searched everywhere.....

This is a common problem on lots of 172/182's. Apparently it's to do with the top mounts, and you can take it to Renault to have them filed down (there's a Renault technical note regarding this). However I wouldn't worry about it because 1) the fix doesn't really work and 2) it only happens when on full-lock, which is only when parking, etc.

Cheers Mike, thats great. I won't worry then anymore.

Mark, mine was registered in Jan 2004 and apparantley is one of the very last 172's every produced.

Is this likely to do any long term damage if just left alone, which seems simplest thing to do especially as dealer is bound to fob you off etc? I remember a similar post and think the technical note as mentioned referred to anti-corrosion treatment. Wouldn't want anything to rust to pieces in 5 year's time...

My Cup always makes that noise on full-lock. Ive had the mounts replaced by Renault. I wouldnt worry as its a common fault however if it gets worse for example under normal driving conditions Id take it to the dealers, argue for something under warranty. Works for me :)

Just a question from a complete novice with cars...would fitting Coilovers sort this problem?? Very tempted by the H&R's on the GDI website for my 182..
