182 vs. 172 5th gear @ 70 mph +

  Clio 197

Forgot to mention... bumped into a 172 owner (and cliosport member) week before last...

He said his car pulled really nicely on the motorway in 5th...

I must say, mine doesnt feel quick at all... My PUG 206 Gti and A3 1.8T used to be a hell of a lot quicker!

Mines ok if you drop it into 4th... wondering if gearing different on 172 & 182?

Would I benefit from a different air intake?

Gearing is different, but not much. Dont forget, whilst the 182 is a fairly torquey lump, peak torque isnt until over 5k rpm.... so dont expect it to pull like a train from 3k rpm...

oh and a different air intake might make your car sound like its going quicker...lol.

My 182 pulls better in fifth gear than my 206 GTi did. Done 1,900 miles so far and loosening up all the time.

Plus it uses significantly less petrol than my 206!!

I thought the 182 I drove felt a bit "flat" in the mid-range actually!

Well... its definately got better... At about 8000 miles, it still felt slow... but dealer told me that motorway is quite gentle, and maybe I sould spend more time between 5-7000 rpm...

Been doing that, with an improvement at 10,500 miles... however... i miss that instant pickup in 5th that I used to have...

Doesnt matter I suppose... I just drop it into 4th... which takes me to 110 (far more than I need!)... Maybe things will improve further?? Hope so.

From the figures it looks like 182 is slightly longer-geared than the 172 which is preferable on motorways (sometimes I wish my 172 had a 6th gear). So at any given speed in 5th the 172s revs can rise a little quicker which would make it feel quick.

There is nothing in it between the 172/182, i had a blast with one the other day and it was neck and neck, i have got a Viper I/K and a full magnex exhaust, dunno if he had any mods thou!

Suppose its how you break -em in then...

My PUG was a company car, thrashed from day one... thus quicker I guess?!

My 182s been driven gently (since its not really possible to thrash it in motorway traffic. Its had a good seeing to this morning though!
