195 vs 205 tyre width on a 182?

Is there any 'real world' difference in the way the car handles? I've seen quite a few offerings of 195 tyres that are a decent enough saving over 205s. However, I'd rather spend the extra money on the wider tyre, if the 195s are a compromise to the dynamics of a 182.

Cheers,
D.

the last 182 i saw on 195 tyres had been written off at the ring while it was up on ramps being stripped i noticed the narrower tyres but im not saying thats what made him crash though. thats the only time seen 195 on an rs though i hadnt realised it was done before that. quite a saving on tyres as well.

You won't see or feel any real difference pal. When I bought my 182 it had standard wheels on with 205 45 16 tires, I swapped my 16's for 15's and I now run 195 50 15's and they are great, no difference in grip at all. Hope this helps.

Cheers for the responses, guys! I know our 1*2s aren't of Le Mans racing calibre, but I didn't want to upset the handling by fitting a narrower tyre.

Looks like I might make a saving then! :)

Thanks again,
D.

Depends on what kind of tire we are talking about, road, track, load index, size? I ran 195 R888 all around the car from the begining. Did not work very well since the "structure" of the tire was to soft to take the lateral forces on the tire. The tire did "fold in" under hard cornering. Now i run 205´s with W87 in load index in front and 195 V83 in the rear. Great combo, not perfect some folding behavioure remains, but much better. Better grip, less understeer and less wear on track. I am convinced that these possitive effects has more to do with the stiffer sides of the tire that the actual width of the tire.

EDIT: A 195 R888 is as wide as a 205 road tire.

Does make a noticeable difference. On 195's the car moves about more, feels more playful. 205's grip more. I prefer 205's tbh.

Agree with this. Not massive but noticeable.

I had a spare set of 195s on while my wheels were being refurbed and they felt a bit squirmy.

for me i agree with warren, drove superbenji's sunflower 172 on 195 F1's, was good but was a lot more loose. the 205 just gives you that little bit more confidence but the difference is minimal.

suppose a lot depends on your driving style too!

I certainly found the Cup (195's) less 'chewy' on full lock than the 182......

I agree with Marky and Warren4, I went from 205 to 195 and can feel the difference, but that also down to the tyres(toyo px4), which are shocking.

Not sure about all toyos but the px4 are the worst tyres i have ever had, struggle to grip in dry and wet and you can hear them trying to grip on corners... not impressed at all.

I'm on turinis now, but didnt have a choice with the tyres, next will be hanook or michelins

With the same brand but different sizes the only thing I've noticed is it moves about a bit more when making progress on 195s.

Apart from that balance, braking etc. are all the same.

You'd notice more of a difference in a brand change than from an increse/reduction from/to 195/205.

172 rims looks pish with 195's on. like a wannabe EURO stretched tyre effort. 205's offer better rim protection too surely?

And has anyone had any rubbing issues running 205 45 R16's on the standard 172FF and turini rims ?

As i may give these a go come renewal time as long as they don't scrub as i'm lowered on sportlines and running 195 at the moment on turinis

Hey all, I have been given a set of 195/45/R16's for my 182 which currently has 205/45/r16's I know what you have all been saying but I drive a bit crazy. Lead footed. Is there chance the tyre will fold when going round corners too hard?

The tyres are less likely to fold with them having a smaller sidewall on the 195

I'm sure the 4.4mm difference in the sidewall is going to make a massive difference in the chances of folding the tyre.
