197/200 gearbox problems: how common and how much to fix?

  clio 172 phase 2
Hi there,

I'm considering buying a 197 or 200 but the gearbox problems are putting me off. I have read that some people have had more than 1 gearbox replaced under warranty - does this mean that there is not a fix or updated parts to solve the problem?

Does anyone have an idea of how common the issue is?

Has anyone had this issues and paid for it to be fixed or paid for a new gearbox? If so how much did it cost?

Many thanks

ive just bought a 200 mate and i was worried about this aswell ive got a warranty on mine so touch wood if it goes ive got cover for it i also had it checked by mark fish who is local to me he gave it the all clear as long you dont rag it around spining the wheels it should be ok when i got mine it made a weird noise if you go through the gears quick eg busy roundabout straight on to the motorway 2/3/4 around 6.5/7rpm i dont do that all the time btw but speaking to a few 200 owners its normal i know there is the issue on down change 4th to 3rd iirc where they crunch thats the issue with the gearbox other then that ive had my car for nearly a month now and i find it a really well thought out car fun to drive bigger space inside handles lovely to and it does to me feel really well put together hope this helps Terry

Very helpful. £1.1k includes or excludes fitting?

Will a new gearbox still have the same weaknesses as the original ones?

My two good friends get their Clio's looked after by Mark Fish and have nothing but good things to say. He is a 40 min drive from me, so helpful.

i have had no gearbox issues with my 200 or 197 but both are low millage, so when you buy one check the history etc, i would agree with Steves figures for replacement gearbox etc, look for a good spec 197 cup with recaros 08 or 09 plate in white plenty about :race:

not sure were you are based but James at Autoenhance looks after mine for me, he is based in Colchester 01206871187 and is very good imo. 20140731_135840.jpg

They aren't as bad as people go on about either. Still not great though.

The on board computer lies, well it does on mine anyway.

I get 340miles + out of £75 of V power.

Thanks for the Colchester recommendation, bit far from me though.

I am aware of the poor mpg. Also considering 225/r26 (not great mpg as well but faster) or mk5 golf gti which has better mpg. Golf's purchase price is more though.

Exactly lol, 27mpg isn't a good figure for what it is :).

Don't forget that's 27mpg on a run really trying to save the mpg, where as the equiv 1*2's would sit at 40 all day long :].

i must admit that night when i did get home and fill it up i did get 32-34mpg i hadnt reset it while i was on a run because i wanted to see how much i had driven since last week for work etc my old 172 at best i got 34 but i never really took it on a eco run
