197/200's

  200
plus surely the value of a car second hand drops even more when a new version has been released i.e. the megan?

  Coupe/Defender V8
Shouldn't really attack from a bias point of view tbh - I've only ever driven a ph1 personally - but from reviews, critisims and from reading what people on here have said it seems anything newer has gradually become more civilised. This is not what attracts me to a hot hatch!

Doesn't seem that much else has changed - a few people have had gripes of knocking etc from their 200s so they're obviously still not devoid of the usual gripes.

I think standard for standard it's a case of if you like how it looks - go for it. Pound for pound out on the track theres not a whole lot of difference is there really? ( In an ideal world new from the show room point of view)

Cooper S is more expensive financed though ;) well it was when I was shopping around.

JAMIE: I agree on second hand market that there are plenty of performance bargains. However running costs on R26 and RS are more expensive. Tires are more, tax bands are higher etc. Also these cars which are the same money on the second market as a second 197/200 are going to be older.

Is horses for courses. I love having new cars and not having to worry about faults. Fully appreciate for toher people they'd rather have the money in their pockets.

Anyway, presume you are looking at spending low to mid teens on a new car, and for that kinda money there is a lot of performance you can get second hand. So what else does it need to do?

I've not yet driven the 200, but the Cooper S is a better car than the 197 in pretty much every way (bar looks) IMO.
I'm not against the 200 at all (but I think the 197 was a dissapointment)
But there's too many owners on here that seem to insist there's zero faults with their car.
For the record, my cars s**t, but it's great to drive and suits me perfectly. Still s**t though.

Don't see how a 197 is a disappointment.
Had T for three yrs & my Cup is a far better car.

Look at these; http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=451436

The car in front in one vid is a full jap spec teg, don't see a difference in perfomance. Yet on paper it should muller me.
The subaru is 340 bhp+ monster, so 197 seem very disappointing;)

My car is also worth more now than i paid for it in Feb:S

  172 - 249bhp @ the wheels
whoever keeps comparing mini prices to the Clio also needs to wake up. A colleague at work has just bought a basic 1.6 non Cooper S mini for his missus and by the time you spec it with things like pedals and seats they come to over £17k.

LOL @ seats and pedals.

Cooper S: £16,580

Renaultsport 200: £16,750

You can argue about spec, but it's cheaper.

A cooper s is a great car i agree but their 10 a penny, They have less appeal to me because their so common, the 200 stands out. Granted 99% of pics on here make it look crap but they have a big presence on the road (saw one the other day). The mini may be cheaper but you have to spec it to near 20k to get near the toys the clio has as standard. And when i drive i like to see the speedo in front of me not in the middle. its for the driver not for the person in the car behind you to see!

Well if you buy a new money you pretty much NEED the Chilli pack and TLC...so there's another £2k onto the price just with the Chilli pack?

For a proper drivers car you'd want the JCW and that's more than £20k.

Remember hearing you even have to pay for the cooper stripes along the front?

Im not trying to justify anything. A clio is cheaper, i got a car with a load of gizmos more fun (in my opinion) and something that there are not many of (near me)
You atleast wanna be spending 17k on a mini which is the one i speccd up. But its all comparitive as you pay more for a mini new, you pay more for a mini second hand,
you pay less for a sport new, you pay less for a sport second hand.

  RS200
You cant say that minis are better in everyway than a clio but their also cheaper? as has been said you pretty much get wheels and a body for the entry price

  GTD, Lupo
that cant be the reason to justify your point

More people buy minis so there is no need to drop the price. The mini is more of a status booster these days. Most people you see driving them are young bussiness type people, mainly girls or young lads. Quite a lot of them are company cars, RR had a massive mini scheme a while back but i think that has died down now.

Yup...and there's only two solid colours to choose from...anything else is extra. You only get little 16" alloys on the S as standard...options are £300-800 for 17".

Chilli pack...for £2k you get Xenon's (so I presume they aren't included on the basic car), automatic A/C, a luggage compartment and a passenger height adjustable seat...what a s**t way to spend £2k!

No option for Recaro's on the regular 'S'...no Brembo's...no 17's...less power...turbo charger delivery (yuch) and a few other compromises. You do however get a posers car that has been design by people who are far too over indulgent with their retro styling cues.

Oh and the Mini...apparently...isn't as good on the road/track.

Heres a stupid thing about the clio, a passenger can turn the engine off by pushing the button right next to them whilst going along...

  200
Im not being funny but you could push it by mistake as its next to all the other buttons, a drunk person in the car?

Next time you stop for petrol, ask them to grab you something from inside. Drive off. That'll learn them. Hard!

Rofl at designed for track use.
"Yes, keyless entry, cornering lights, cup-holders etc etc are essential for a quick ring time."
You pay more for the Golf as it's a bigger car. And vastly higher quality.

3-4 years ago, everyone on here was criticising the CTR for it's narrow power band, now it's Clio with the narrow power band it's a good thing?

And the list price of the Cooper S is lower than the 200. Yes you can get better discounts on the 200, but that's due to relative lack of demand and poorer quality. Hardly good things!

to be fair mate, ive always thought all RS have got a narrow power band. My old 182 used to drive me bonkers with the gear ratios for overtaking, i find my F1 alot more punchier tbh.

I dont really think they have missed the mark with the 197/200's, i think they have got em spot on tbh. (so far lol!)

Didn't say that:D

Selling mine in a week or two, not because there is anything wrong with it.
Just don't fancy keeping GW mint in the winter & new house on the horizon.

Just buy another RS in the spring, or may go RWD;)

You're the 1st person to say it's the driver that matters on track (most important nut in the car IIrc). I went past a new FRS at Bedford, proved nothing other than he couldn't drive! It in no way made my car better than his.
I was dissapointed with all the 197's I drove, main issues being the steering and peaky power delivery. Interior's great, looks fantastic, great brakes.
