197/200's

  Mondeo TDCI 130
Heres a stupid thing about the clio, a passenger can turn the engine off by pushing the button right next to them whilst going along...

lol, have you actually tried it when moving? it shouldnt work when the vehicle is moving.;)

Agree to an extent. The early 197 I drove had numb steering. Then again, my 182 has numb steering compared to my 306. The 182 also has about a thousand turns lock to lock :(

What bothers me, is that vw can produce a more powerful engine (mk5 gti) pushing a heavier car, that mullers the 197 for economy. As can mini.

but the golf weighs as much as the moon and how are you putting a 2.0turbo in the same catogory as the n/a 197. Its technicly in the meggys class but the golfs so slow that it couldnt keep pace with anything in the clios class. 197 would hammer a new golf round any track imo

I know stuff all about cars so I won't argue the merits of power/speed of one over another. However, having seen literally hundreds of BMW mini drivers I have to say that I am glad I don't fall into that dynamic.

  STEALTH RAIDER
Everybody buys their own car for a reason, new or old. Whether its cheaper than others or this has more spec than that. Its what you can afford, what you like, how you want to drive it. All cars have advantages and disadvantages. All manufacturers have a certain area where their money is spent. Comparing cars is like comparing mens dicks. All different. All cars have their problems, yet some have none. People tune and change things on their cars to make them how they want it. Most arguements on forums are down to taste and opinion. Thats what everyone is here for. If you won the lottery tommorow, i know most people's opinions would change, but its like waiting for anything else to be perfect.

Is it? Can't say I've really tried this before but you sound experienced.

I like the 197 better than the 200 in terms of looks but I think the mpg on both cars is terrible. A car of that size shouldn't be that bad imo. I guess the weight plays a part. 1*2's were the perfect balance between performance and economy.

My only gripe with the 197, and where i feel it missed the mark was with the terrible idle problem from cold. OK, so this was resolved to a fairly acceptable level with the patch fix, but it should not have been released with such crap characteristics IMO.

That being said, the 182 and 172 were no better. They had all sorts of quality issues.

Overall i think the 197 was deffo an advancement over the 172 and 182 having owned them too, but its a shame Ren could not have made more of an effort with the engine characteristics.

In terms of economy, maybe you dont buy a sports car for the MPG, but my 3.0 BMW auto is way more rapid, and i'm seeing a better MPG combined than the 197.

This months Evo mag happens to have laptimes around the Bedford West Circuit of both cars:

VW Golf GTI (Mk6) 1.32.4
Renaultsport Clio 197 Cup 1.34.2

Although I'm sure it was a hell of a lot more fun in the clio, and absolutely the one I would have on my driveway!
