2.0 Turbo engine in the Clio 172

Hello everyone, I'm interested in fitting a 2.0 turbo engine into the Clio 172 bay. Is there any 2.0 T engine out there, made in the last 10 years or so, which will fit and mount easily in the 172 bay (presumably together with its own gearbox) ?

Any make or model will do, as long as it's a good tunable engine, it has precisely 1998 cc and can be simply installed in the 172.

Thanks for your opinions

Well this is exactly why I asked for "any make and model that would fit easily", because I read a lot about the difficulties of fitting the F4Rt from the Megane (which would be the first choice).

BTW, how extensive are these necessary modifications to the mounts ? Do they involve major changes to the mounting places in the bay (i.e. drilling new holes, modifying bulkheads etc.) ? Or is it mostly making / moding parts but the engine fits and "sits" in the same support places ?

Anyway if you know of other options I'd be interested in them too, since a new engine (by itself) is quite a lot cheaper than a full turbo conversion.

those are the only two engine conversion I know of. So i'd imagine that's about as easy as it will get. Why do you think it will be cheaper? If you do the work yourself a turbo setup can be done for less than 3k and that's with standalone. Engine/GB cost won't be cheap unless you're lucky with a second hand unit.

That figure might be a bit optimistic. From what I've heard from people that have done (multiple) setups, a good turbo conversion including all engine mods to accomodate it (and not have it break down some 500 miles later) will reach 4k - 5k. And I am indeed looking for a second hand unit :)

BTW, any info on what are the necessary changes for the two units mentioned (from the Megane and TT) ? Do they require extensive mods (new holes, modified bulkheads etc.) or does the engine fit in the same position and over the same mounts so there are only some parts adaptated in between ? I couldn't get a clear picture reading through the other threads. Thanks.

I've used the megsne engine with the Clio box sits straight on same mounts and only took half hour too drill and tap a few holes for the box too fit the block

I just put a turbo on my 2 litre, no mucking about with engine conversions, custom mounts etc.....

Hi Owen, that is great news. I am especially interested in how the engine sits on the mounts, since modifying the mounts (that is, the engine bay walls or the place of the mount on them) might lead to legal problems over here. So if the engine block itself sits straightforward on the mounts, without the need to move them relative to the chassis it's extremely helpful.

Megane mounts use same fixing points as it's pretty much the same block with different head and internals. Megane 225 engine with either Megane or Clio box, although the Clio box won't last too long at 250+ bhp if driven hard.

And tbh, I wouldn't try doing it keeping to much of a budget, end up skimping on decent necessary parts

I like the idea of this, then at least you get to pick the turbo you want and the money saved on not buying a new engine can be spent on getting the right CR with pistons/HG.

Did you have ot have an exhaust manifld fabricated or were you able to buy one off the shelf?

  Nothing at the mo :(
Thought megane box doesn't fit and requires cutting out some of the engine bay to make it fit? Sure that's correct t

Will the r26 box bolt to an f4r then?

similar but not identical, the gearbox end is larger and it runs the water pump off the cambelt instead of the aux belt like the f4r found in 1*2. Everything else is interchangeable, crank, pistons, heads etc....

typical. Always wondered why I hadn't see anyone put one on instead of going down the lsd route.
