2 alternators?

  AB182, Audi A5 3.0
is it possible to wire up 2 alts in parallel? i need more ampers and just wondering the best way to get it for cheap. i dont want another bat or caps. any ideas?

in answer to your first question, i'm sure it could be done, but would cost a small fortune and not be worth it. Just buy a Bigger/better/more efficient alternator to replace your current one.

Your right about the cap, you dont want one because they do jack s**t.

You will want to consider upgrading your battery at the same time as the alternator, as well as upgrading the cabling between alternator and battery and earth.

cant afford a new bat, i just got this one about 3 months ago! lol. i tryed looking for a higher output alt, but no luck! my alternator seems to have an adjustable slot on the top hole, to set the tension. i havent seen any other alt like it. its a 1.2 1997 btw. diet engine.

you cant find a higher output alternator?? then the one on a 1.2?? You aint looking hard enough mate! Get yourself to a decent motorfactors and they will be able to sort you one out. Some of them even do them in pretty colours, lol.

maybe look about getting the alt rewound???

and as above ditch the cap(s) as they are more strain on the electrical system.

also what type of power do you need?

thats not what i said, i said i cant find one that fits, as mine has some shitty adjustment slot for the tension, not the normal 3 holes.

you going to be running that amp at 1 ohm then yeah you prolly need about 150A just for the amps

yeah at 1ohm (2xpioneer ts-w3004spl's). atm with the small 75A alt the amp goes into clipping at about half vol, not good at all! (even tho its only dropping to 12.5v just before it clips) so i need a high power source!

whats the difference between 3 pin and 2 pin alts?

you have set the gains right aint you???

that does seem a little early for it to clip

as far as i know iv set them up right. i set the out put from the hu using my scope, so on full vol its not clipping (2 clicks down from clipping). and then i set the gain on the power amps, by again using the scope (on the speaker output this time tho) and raising the gain until it just starts to clip, then put it down a touch.

so atm it dosnt clip, but its not putting out full power either - it running at around 600wrms, which is far off the 1500rms it should be doing...

i just had another idea, is it possible to add a second pully onto the alt? to drive a second alt purely for the amps?

did you check the output with a load connected???

you haven't adjusted the bass setting on the hu have you since doing the scoping?

your not going to get 14.4v(that is the absolute max the regulator in the alt will allow) you'd be lucky to get 13.5v (which i what i get from my 90A alt)
