2001 clio overheating in traffic?

Hi

In traffic the temperature gauge is getting close to the "Turn off now or die" section. Is this a head gasket failure, its done 67,000 miles and only really does short journey's. There is no loss of water/coolant in the radiator, so its not a leak. Is this common?

Yep, been checking it after every journey only 2cm of maximum.

Could even be a thermostat stuck/failed in the closed position (I had this with a 172 yesterday after fitting a new Renault item)... Really needs to be seen I'm afraid to offer an accurate diagnosis.
