2g Iphone upgrade question

Any knowledgeable chaps from the phone world know the answer to this, or shed some light?

Mum is still rocking a 2g iphone on an o2 simplicity tariff I gave her a couple of years ago, does more than she needs but I want to upgrade it for her.

Can it be brought into apple and just pay for an upgrade or is the only option to sell it and buy another?

You can't just 'upgrade' because the phone was never on a proper contract really, that's not how it worked with a 2G.

You just need to buy another one.
