2K to spend. Phase 1 or Phase 2 Cup?

  Nissan 350Z
My old MX5 failed the MOT so I need a new car. Something quick and fun to drive but cheap to run. So I'm looking at going back to the clio fold.

I was mainly thinking of a Phase 1, but the Cup attracts plenty of praise.

I've got £2K to spend.

The way I see it, from what I've read:-
  • Phase 1 just as raw, but has creature comforts - better interior
  • Phase 1 has a cable throttle - much more responsive
  • Phase 1 is approx 20 - 30 kg heavier than a Cup
  • Phase 1 has cheaper tyres and better ride quality but slightly worse handling overall
  • Phase 1 has taller ratios
  • Phase 1 has cheaper insurance
I'm interested to hear the opinions of those who have driven both.

1) Why don't you fix the MX5?

2) Buy the best condition car you can find for £2k. Most of them will be sheds.

At 2k you will pick up a good car if you look hard. Sold my Flamer for only a little more than that and you won't find anything much tidier than that. But i agree with Revels, don't aim for a certain one - aim for as good a condition Clio as you can get.

As said though, why not fix the mx5?

I have had both and I prefer the ph2 easily and I picked mine up for just short of 2k all that was wrong was a busted window....but both lots of fun to drive

  Whichever has fuel
Phase 1 all day long.

Find one thats had recent front and rear brakes, cam + Aux kits by a specialist and you've got a very nice cheap capable car.

Got a ph2 cup now and had 2 ph1's previously. I'd go for a ph1 - the interior is minging, and it has air con but apart from that it's better overall I think (in terms of price/equipment/looks/performance). Feel better built for some reason. Throttle cable is nice - but I don't notice that much difference in throttle response!

Imprezaworks has a nice one for sale £1650 with good mods.

i prefer the phase 1...not too keen on the phase 2 front look with those headlights, look outta place in comparison

Not interested in a 182 FF? Mine was £1,850.

No, I've already had a full fat 182. IMO it was over-tyred, had poor throttle response and too refined. From what I've read about the Phase 1, it fixes pretty much everything I disliked about the 182. I was just wondering how the Cup compares, but, I think I've made my mind up on the Phase 1.

Just need to find a good one for a bit under £2k. There are a few decent looking ones about, however some of them have mods that put me off them (decatted exhausts I'm looking at you - can't be bothered with the hassle come MOT time).

I just couldn't live with the ph1 front end and the interior

No Matter how good the car is.... I wouldn't even own a ph1 v6

Ph2 172 it would be for me
