3 days of ownership complaining already...

sorry!

obviously id love to say im really happy owning a 172 but 3 days since buying it im starting to hate it already :(

il point out before i go on that mechanically i know pretty much sweet f.a

i dont know if im overeacting here but i cant help think iv been sold a s**t box its has warranty at garage but with nothing definite to go on i cant take it back

ok so firstly the engine is making a weird noise or something is coming from under the bonnet anyway! iv searched through so many posts and all iv come up with is when it ticks on idle but i woudnt say its a ticking sound almost like the sound a belt would make while going round if it was rubbing on something like a churning sound lol ( aux and cambelt are gettin done this week)

the brakes are crunching and pedal vibrating as though abs kicking in basically everytime i brake even when braking gentley at very low speeds.

also more annoying than a worry theres a buzzing from under the passenger side dash thats really loud and driving me flamin insane and the bonnet realease takes about ten attempts to open!

basically im absolutly crapping my self everytime i drive it and feeling a bit gutted

Sounds like you bought a car which needs some work not the cars fault.

If the belts are getting done then that most oikly will fix it otherwsie then have a check at the carbon canistor it might need changing.

Abs slectro rings might be cracked or damaged or loose new ones can be bought might be a faulty sesnor also.

Sounds like the dash issue is a problematic relay

Clean/grease up the bonnet release ASAP else you might find the bonnet comming up when you drive long and damaging the bonnet and the roof.

Did you test drive it first or what?

Get used to most of squeaks and rattles. Ticking could be injectors. Thought about taking it back to the garage and saying you're not happy?

Ticking on idle, especially when warm could be the charcoal cannister. Also heard whilst pootling about town. Quick test, rev it to 4k, then bring down the idle. If the ticking goes, then comes back after 30 seconds or so, it'll be this. Not a bit job, part is £45 notes. Brakes sound warped to me (over zealous previous owner?) or binding calipers. Again, no real biggy imo.

ye its from garage with 3 month warranty , i did test drive it ye but it was pissing down so took it real easy everything sounded and felt fine only once home i started noticing stuff

the problem i have is ringing them back with nothing specific to go on you know what garages are like for trying to get out of paying for anything under warranty!

Do you know anyone who is into cars & knows what they are looking at ?? Or is mechanically minded ??
If not you could ask the AA or the RAC to give it the once over, then go from there.

Where abouts are you ?

I had a few really annoying rattles, knocks, horrible sounds just after i bought mine, but with a few searches on here, you can pretty much find out how to fix anything thats a common fault!

If your mechanic hasn't the tools or done them before then don't get him to do the belt its easy enough to mess them up

Know how you feel - mine had a few minor issues when I bought it that just take the edge off the excitement of buying it. But, if you take each one separately, there's nothing there that sounds too nasty......

Engine - get to a proper specialist for the cambelt work. Not cheap but worth it and they should be able to diagnose the strange noise.

Brakes - sounds like a sensor possibly. How much is left on the pads?

Buzzing - as said could be a relay (simple fix), or some loose trim (ditto)

Bonnet release - these are notorious; get the WD40 on it asap, and greased properly when you go to a garage.

There you go - by the end of the month, you'll have a stunning motor that you can enjoy fully :)

The brakes sound exactly like the issue I had when I bought my 172. Turned out to be a cracked ABS ring on the drivers side and everytime I braked even at low speed the pedal would vibrate and the wheels would skip and it felt really unsafe! The buzzing also is that not the climate control sensor near the courtesy light in the centre of the roof bit, all common faults and easy to remedy

Annoying buzzing could be the climate control sensor/fan which is situated on between the sun visors in the interior light console

I had the same in my 172 an dit drove me fooking crazy...turns out taing it apart & cleaning solved the problem

wickedbitch

I had new aux belt coil pack and plugs and clutch done on mine the same week i bought it but mines got 100000 on the clock so i expected to have to get some work done. Think I must have got one of the good ones as since i had that done ive had no probs, and I only have to pay for parts with me working with adam and him being a time served renault specialist. (lucky me)

H86 ---- I bought a car that sounded a lot like this, and evetunally got a refund. Did you get it from a garage called HTC in Derby, if you did I may be able to shed some info on this one for you.

oh dear! no was a garage near scarborough!

how did u manage to get a refund what was wrong with it in the end?

getting engine checked over tommorow so will wait and see what they say ... :S

  Iceberg 172
HTC have a lot of 172s don't they? Saw a few there when I was looking, but mostly overpriced for what they were.

Basically it was a kipper! when i test drove it, it was fine. A week later when i picked it up, it wasnt! (all they did was Service/MOT it!) I took it back 24 hours after i bought it, there was a noise coming from the cam, belived to be a lifter issue, I also had the climate control fan noise, I also had dodgy brakes, i also had unbalanced wheels and also had tracking out! Anyway, so as you can imagine, I wasnt a happy bunny. Anyway, they had it back under warranty and after much moaning and 3 1/2 weeks later they still hadnt fixed it (some of that time WITHOUT a courtesy car) I spoke to trading standards, after i threatened them with trading standards, HTC tried to call my bluff by saying "go on then" anyway, 1/2 hour later they backed down and i went back two days after that and got a full return to invoice refund. HTC can sell cars, thats what they are quite good at, but there aftersales service is s**t, they dont return calls etc... I gave up taking to the monkey salesman and spoke to the director of the company and thats how i got my refund.

It wasnt overpriced when i bought it, it was about right. But every cloud has a silver lining, i now own a better Black 172 than i bought from HTC, which i paid £900 less for than i did the 1st one!

Shortest ownership of car goes to Badger172 for 24Hrs Ownership of a 172!

oh god thats sounds well bad!! :(

hpi - ye came back ok.

i might just be over paranoid. il just wait and see if they think the engine sounds ok or not tommorow thats all i can do! and go from there. As for the brakes theres deffo a prob which from here i think maybe cracked abs ring, rang garage and told them this and they said it sounded like it and to get a quote for repair and ket them know!! :)

  BMW F21 125d
Basically under the sales of goods act, the seller has a duty of care to provide you with a product which is fit. If you find it going a bit Pete Tong, speak to the garage and try and agree on a timescale to which you want it fixed by (2 weeks say) if that isn't met then you then have the ammo to go to trading standards and take the garage to the cleaners! Good luck, its a knightmare situation to be in.

Doesn't sound like anything too bad has happened.

Just sounds like a few niggles that you need to get sorted.

Breaking problem def sounds like an ABS issue, either with the ring or sensor.

I bet my bottom dollar that the buzzing sound is coming from the interor light above your head where there is a small fan. Remove and clean it.

  RB 182
Yay someone mentioned the climate fan buzzing! I think it probably fooled everyone at first into thinking it was coming from under the dash, or the passenger seat lol

Its above your head, in the interior light unit put your ear right upto the bit the looks like a microphone, lots of little holes. The noise is there! Its better just to get a new one, arent they only like £12 or something?

  Clio 172 mk2
Still betterto try dismantle and regrease the fan spindle..seems to work

TBH the noise was getting unbearable...so f**king loud
