My RS2'd RB van

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
We've had the RS2 car for a couple of years now, and its been an epic little motor, the mrs has been using it daily for about 30K miles or so, we have done probably 400-500 track sessions in it, a 5 day trip to the ring and spa last year and it really has been fantastic.

But there was always been one harsh reality about the car letting it down, which is that we never bought it to be a big money project car that it turned into, when we bought it we did so as a cheap and cheerful runabout, it was mechically sound despite being high miles but the paint was always tatty.
Then a couple of months ago it was parked in a line of cars that got keyed, so I had decided that it was finally respray time as Lesley loves detailing it and although she does a great job of making it look decent (she's even done ok at repairing the key damage) I just wanted her to have a better paintjob in the first place.

But yesterday I became aware of an RB182 for sale at what IMHO was silly cheap money, being sold by a saab specialist I knew of from the Saab forum im on with my saab powered mid engine nova.
So we went straight down and bought it and instead of getting hers resprayed we are now just going to rebuild it into this new shell instead.

Its got one big stone chip on the bonnet, but other than that is pretty much mint, its had the wheels painted elsewhere is totally standard as far as I can tell, standard map on it, standard exhaust, standard airbox, standard radio etc, and seems to have been really well looked after, although has lost the cup splitter along the way.
Also its a Climate control one which we specifically wanted.

We're proper pleased with it so far.

So here are a few outgoing pics of the old car, which we are going to use a coupe of last times this year, and then the swap over will happen over winter when we are out of the trackday season and hopefully have finished with all the house stuff we are doing at the moment.

Couldnt agree more Mick.. :rasp:

If think your Mrs will love RB Chip.. Properly nice colour when clean and looks so different under different lighting

Best colour... EVER!

Agreed, we have been on the lookout for one for ages as even before we decided to reshell les's we wanted one "just because", but it was so hard to find one that fitted exactly what we wanted, hence snapping this one up straight away as soon as I heard it was available.

Can see us keeping this one for a very long time! (or until I bin it on track, lol)

You just swapping the RS2 over chip or whole engine? I cant remembe if the RS2 engine is standard or not...

She is really looking forward to detailing it, TBH its in a right state cleanliness wise, I dont recall ever seeing a car that more needed a clay, the paint actually feels like paper at the moment!
Plus its got loads and loads of swirls etc as I dont think it was ever detailed in its life, but I know she will do a great job of sorting that.

Current plan is initially just to fit some silver turinis and detail it, then over winter we will take the other one off the road and swap all the bits over, then once I finally get round to the honda conversion on the mk1 Im going to pinch the Quaiffe diff'ed gearbox from that to add to this one which will be the only spec difference from the current car I think.

I personally wouldn't rid of my PB now unless it was for a really nice 172 Cup (to drop my RS2 into) but that colour looks amazeballs especially when clean (which we know Lesley likes to do). Is all the spare time going in to this now Chip for Llandow?

Its not standard but isnt massively modified either, will see how this engine responds to some basic sorting (cam timing feels out at the moment so it doesnt pull as it should) and then decide if I am going to fit the whole engine from the other one or not.
The spec of the other engine is:
Supertech inlet valves
Supertech exhaust valves
197 cams on MWM timing
ARP head bolts
ARP rod bolts
151K miles and rising, but I gave it a refresh at 140K with new rings

If the new engine turns out to be a good one, I might just go for retiming the 172 cams and fitting the RS2 and just use that for now, then keep the current engine tucked away in one of the garages as a spare good working lump that we know we can just drop in if anytime we need to.

No mate, this one wont see a track this year, the current RS2 car is going to be at llandow, and we will do the swap over winter.

Keep out of my way if you go as no one wants to be in a battle with someone who is just about to throw their shell away and so has nothing to lose ;)

Agreed, its one of the things that me and the mrs both 100% agree on styling wise.

If it wasnt an RB then for me it would have to be a trophy or black and for her a LY or black, so it was going to be either a black shell or RB, but the RB out of those two we agree on is the one we both love the most and we both think they look best on silver turinis (although it will be on anthracite F1s for track) so no disucssion needed on that side of things.
And same for the spec TBH, we both love everything about how the current car drives, just hated the tatty paintwork!

Thanks lads :)

Seems like most people have a soft spot for them.

This one didnt seem to have "RB Tax" on it though, so I think we got a bargain, it was priced the same as if it was black/silver etc for similar mileage and condition.

Only owes us 2K including putting 6 months tax on it. although that will change when we add thousands of pounds of bits from the other car of course, lol.

How many cars/projects do you guys have? if you dont mind me asking, also that petrol station looks riduclously like the bp in boreham but a few years back.

Umm at the moment we have:
V6 converted 4wd calibra
Mini with modified mini engine
Mid engined nova with Saab turbo engine
Mini with vauxhall engine
Mk1 clio will cammed williams engine on custom inlet and aftermarket
RS2 172
Ph1 clio turbo
Old whale tail sierra
And the RB182

A few of them are going though, Im trying to cut down in numbers so I have more time to finish a few.

The BP was an M5 service station on way home from silverstone IIRC

Lesley wants a respray, so you buy a whole new car LOL.

Should look good when done, still a bit mad though.

(Reshell the turbo into her car)

A paint job to original standard would be dearer than the new car, especially being a colour change.
Sounds daft but makes perfect sense economically.

That rb started out at £2500 then come down in price....

I was willing to down grade to free up money to do house up! It will wait.

Yeah he initially had it up for more and then dropped it on sunday so we snapped it up.
TBH having seen it in real life, I would have given the 2500 if he held out for it, it really is a tidy car.

He got his mechanic to fit 2 new genuine renault wheel bearings too before he sold it, so god knows how me ended up making any money at all on it for what we got it for.

Mike had mine around March/April time iirc. I think he did another RB very recently with the different timing settings though :)

Mine was the RB Mike mapped less than two weeks ago, standard cams different timing.

BTW RB is the best colour for a 182 so good buy Chip, I look forward to the build :)

Nice little project! Massive RB fan :)

Im currently starting the same kind of thing, going from my monaco to a ph1, though im technically downgrading it in order to future proof it for a better build :)
