T4RKO 172 Cup

Just sold my 182FF to be able to buy a 172 Cup to create a more focused track/fast road car with the dream of eventually turning into a full on race car for the Tricolore Trophy or Tin Tops in a year or so if possible.

Photos to follow once I have uploaded a few to Photobucket.

Well this is the 182FF I have been running recently. Totally standard but very enjoyable. I thought it would be better to sell this and buy a 172 before spending any money on it. My theory was even stripping the 182 down it would still be heavier than the Cup and it would cost me money to replace parts and do an air con delete etc.

The car is in pretty good condition but if you look closely at the photos you will see the wheels could do with a refurb, the bonnet has a rust spot on the front edge and the rear bumper has been cut by a previous owner for a twin exit tail pipe.

Carbon bonnet should be arriving in the new year. :)

The wheels are a little tatty so not sure if they are worth refurbishing, just keeping for winter wheels or swapping for something else with someone. Any suggestions as I hear they are quite sort after and popular.

I used to have those in 17" on my MX-5. I fancy 15" for my track wheels. I may get these refurbished unless anyone wants to swap for some Team Dynamics 1.2 or similar?

Yes I like them too. They are a little heavier than the Team Dynamics though aren't they and more expensive?

I would like Anthracite Pro Race 1.2 but gloss black seem to be more available and cheaper.

No Air Con as far as I can see.

One downside is that the Cup still have the spare wheel well which looks untidy when stripped out compared to the 182 but never mind.

Also during the drive home the exhaust started blowing badly. To get this welded up under warranty will be a 4 hour round trip and as it won't be staying standard for long I am unlikely to bother with that. I am considering the K-Tec recessed Supersport and Decat or the Pure Motorsport Race exhaust. Any other recommendations for a light weight single silencer race exhaust?

Ah the cat d from Dtm'. Any idea what the damage was?

No there are no tell tale signs of any previous damage. A couple of tiny car park dents that are barely noticeable, a poor bonnet, split in the bottom of the front bumper and a exhaust cut out in the rear bumper were the only things I could spot. Can't have been that much damage for a Cat D anyway. Might have just had a bumper or wing replaced or something? Does anyone else on here have any idea or previous history of the car?

The main things for me was it had already had the Cam Belt, Dephaser and Aux belts done which I was wanting to do on my 182 so this saved me £500

My black one was a Cat D too so no worse off. This 172 feels much quicker than the 182. Trevor from DTM says it could be to do with the cam timing as some do not set them up correctly after a dephaser change. Either way we have a decent base to start from.

There is a little rust in the bottom of the spare wheel well so might actually look at having this cut out and a flat plate welded in.

Just before you get carried away mark, the spare wheel well is handy if you're driving to trackdays, makes getting a set of track wheels in the back a bit easier.
Re. The timing, every one I've ever put a belt on the timing was out previously. At least you know it'll be bang on from trev/Andy and the boys.

I've got a 182 boot floor to replace mine with but I have thought about keeping it, its where I put my two 10L fuel cans for a track day!

Well it was 12:30 in the morning, freezing cold and dark by the time I got home but I went out after the Mrs had gone to bed armed with a socket set, screwdriver and a torch and here we are:

That will keep he engine sounding angry enough until I get the ITB's fitted in a few months.

Another late night out in the frost. The stripping has begun!

ISOFIX bar was a tough little sausage to remove with a normal shifter. It was very tight but we managed:

This seat bolt caused an issue as the head rounds with the torx so had to be cut off. I will deal with the remainder some time

Then continued to strip the plastics:

It was freezing today but that didn't stop me:

I continued stripping the interior as the standard start to any track build:

Found 50p, a house key, a pack of fag papers and plenty of crumbs! Really needs a good Hoover and clean.

More importantly I had to do the clutch as the linkage from pedal to cable kept randomly popping off. The car was supposedly under warranty but rather than send a new part that I required I was sent a pedal set from a breaker.

I managed to remove the offending article from this set and get it swapped out so hopefully that's the end of that issue.

Also after a quick drive out I checked the alignment of the intake pipe and filter. All seemed to be spot on but as there is some movement I used a strip of plastic from the edge of a motorcycle screen to protect it from the metal work.

What I was thinking was to cut a circular sheet of metal and weld a rod to it with a threaded sleeve at the end. Then you could just spin the plate on and off as required to create a flat surface. I would have a protective strip around the sharp edge.

I can't stand the standard steering wheel any longer. The melted state makes your hands sticky and black and the thumb sections are all torn and missing.

Anyway this seems like the cheapest most obvious solution:

I went for the 330mm as I felt 300 might just be a little small.
