Abs Light Hellppppp!!!!

  BMW F31
was driving this morning, abs and service light came on, went off went i was stationary etc.

took it to a garage and they think its one of the abs switches.

took it to another garage as the 1st one couldnt do the work.

£45 fro diagnostic test, sound right???

if it is a switch then how much am i looking at roughly?

1st garage said up to £150

really hope it aint that much, what else can cause the abs light to come on??

  MERCEDES CLS AMG
A "clip" diagnostic computer will determine which circuit has been broken ( £40 check ). An ABS sensor costs £31.45 + vat part number 8200186294 (based on a CB1C) labour should cost no more than £30 - £40

(Based on an ABS sensor failing)

Fit it your self not hard. 40ish for the sensor. Easy to change. Bit hard to remove the old one though. Check them visually and make sure the wire is secure

  BMW F31
just pull out the fuse.. who needs abs anyway!!? lol

lol i was gonna do this but i was somewhere where i had no acces to the info of which fuse it was under the bonnet, assuming it wouldnt be the fuse box in the car right?

  BMW F31
oh i'll go rip it out in a bit as i have 37mile journey home tomorrow morning to get it to my mechanic an it was intermittent earlier e.g one min the light was on and the abs wasnt working (which is fine) the next it was out and the abs was kicking in even at a crawling pace :(

if i take the fuse out then it'll be just like driving without abs right?

  BMW F31
well took it to my local mechanic this morning, he just rang to tell me that it isnt the abs sensor it is the ring on the end of the driveshaft that tells the sensor to kick in has split? now need new drive shaft!! another £138 including fitting which aint bad at all imo but it aint good either after being charged £52 yesterday for the diagnostic at this other garage and it wasnt the fault!! i now have to understandably pick up the cost of the sensor (£85 which i dont need) as it was ordered especially!! ffs!!

does anyone think i have the right to claim from the company who did the diagnostic for them to pick up the bill for the part i have now had to pay for as i took it to them to tell me what was wrong etc and they have not diagnosed it correctly!!

majorly majorly pissed off so any help would be much appreciated guys :(

p.s do you think the -40mm apex springs have caused this?

Nope springs will make no difference.
Dont know where you stand with the diag if they had fixed it it would be easy.

  BMW F31
yeah they couldnt fix it as they had to wait two days and are no where near where i live.

my mechanic said the springs wont have made a difference its just wear and tear.

can you buy the rings seperately as dan has said as my mechanic said he's never known that, they usually come on the driveshaft according to him.

  185lb/ft dCi
yeah the same thing happened to me, my bro took the old one off and replaced it with a ring we found in the garage. Its held in better than the original as well

  BMW F31
b****cks so my mechanic has just charged me £98 for a new driveshaft when i dont need one!! ffs i even rang him and he didnt know, i give up!

i f**king hate garages as i cant trust them :(

  BMW F31
go away!! i was contemplating just leaving the f**king fuse out, but wasnt sure of insurance aspects etc!!

so annoyed my f**king mechanic is charging me for the driveshaft when i blatently dont need one, his excuse was he's ordered it now!!

i hate when my cars get fucked with as they never feel the same!

should of looked at my trusty old haynes!

Tell the mechanic its his mistake for not knowing what was required. You need a new one i think if you have a new drive shaft. Tell him to return the drive shaft and order the right part

  BMW F31
had it all sorted etc, but he's taking it back in monday as there is a vibration between 4.5k and 5.5k any gear only at those revs???? what could this be, if its easy i'd rather do it myself than wait till monday as im going on a trek tomorrow to essex!

it kinda sounds like exhaust, but doesnt blow on idle etc etc, does seem to lose some sort of power when it hits those revs mentioned above, would he had to have touched the exhaust system etc??

  BMW F31
would that cause a problem like that at those revs? any other revs below 4.5k and it is smooth as, surely i would be vibrating etc all the time if it were unbalanced?

The rings can be bought seperate apparently although I cannot find proof (never having looks realy).

The rings can be removed though they whould have a part number on them if there a seperate part. Could always have gone to a scrappei and got a shaft even a bust one and got the ring off it. Scrap place is unlikly to care for a broken shaft as its worth less they won't know the ring is important.

As for the vibrations well what side shaft was it? If its the passenger side then mayeb they didn't fill the gearbox proprly full of oil in wich case check if its drivers then check the driveshafts in good condition etc not got broken gaiters. It sounds like its not balenced vibration like this can just happen harmonic values etc but it shouldn't unless its the wrong shafts ideal get the car up on jacks and get someoen to hold the engine at the rev point where it has trouble and see what happeneing at the wheels etc.
