ABS on a Cup

Does anyone know if the option of ABS was available when you first bought your cup brand new?? Mine was pre registered with renault so i didnt get a choice. Ive seen a few adverts for used cups which state they have ABS....is this possible?

Just curious

Ah so they must by lying .... bit cheeky when it comes to braking in the snow in their new cup and the brakes lock! another one bites the dust?

Rather have a car without ABS if I was driving in snow...

ABS better in the rain though? I locked up my non abs 106 today at a zebra crossing. Fortunatley I wasnt cornering at the time so I still stopped at an acceptable level - nearly gave the granny at the crossing a heart attack tho :D

Does turning off the ESP turn off the ABS? But no ABS on the cup, and i believe its now required on all new cars. Might be talking out my arse, but the 182cup will have it

Policeman told me that if you brake hard in snow then it builds up under the locked wheels giving it a surface to stop on. Where as with ABS the wheels dont allow the build up to happen.

What about ice?

In rain ABS all the way

Never knew that about braking in snow...

Ice is a different story...you lock up and you dont stop...

most cars i have ever owned had abs and i found them terrible in the snow, and not that good in the rain, your best bet is to not drive like an idiot when its wet or snowy (if you dont have abs), i never had a problem with my 172 cup

Thing is. Ive owned cars without ABS before (Metro, escort, cavalier) but the 172 Cup has such powerful brakes compared to them you cant just wack the pedal in the wet because youll lock. You need to be soft

Im bricking it when it comes to the snow, it will be the first time driving the cup this winter.. But your right, if I adapt to the conditions I should be alright. Braking early with plenty of time. I also just cant image it being easy to pull away with all that power....

yeh pulling away is a problem, but it is in most cars really, the best thing is to pull away in 2nd gear, this should help reduce spin.

i do have to say i feel a bit safer with abs, but like i say you just have to be carefull and slow down, abs is of no use whatsoever in the snow, all that happens is that the abs kicks in you get massive vibration from the brakes and you slide all over the place, total waste of time i the snow (i my experience)

in snow and ice the abs is crap because it senses that your locking up and relases the brakes. then when it lets you brake again it locks up so it keeps letting off the brakes an you roll unstoppably forwards. can be quite scary!

Ill be removing the fuse for the abs if it snows properly and will also turn the esp off as well, found the 172 almost undriveable in the snow last year, nearly ended up having a horrific 2mph accident due to the abs not letting me brake!!!
