Advice needed with dealer issue!

Hi all,

If anyone read my previous posts about my car not starting, it was in Renault Colindale a few weeks ago, where after keeping it for 4 days they said they changed a relay that was bad. Car has started ok for the last fortnight now, but today is playing up again. Is going into the dealer again tomorrow (with no bloody courtesy car) for god knows how long. Has anyone got any ideas how to make sure the dealer is actually going to get it sorted this time, coz otherwise I imagine they are going to try and palm me off again?

Anyone got any ideas what it could be specifically? I.e. if it really was a relay, and it has gone again - what would it be that might be causing the relay to go? Otherwise they are just going to fix the symptom rather than the cause I might as well bump start it forever as have to go back to the dealer once a month until the warranty runs out! if it isnt really a relay, anyone got any ideas what it might be?

u turn the key and there is a click from the fusebox and nothing else - not an immobiliser problem either i dont think.

will greatly appreciate any help peeps!

Liam

its not a starter problem is it??

does the starter spin over??

what clio do you have? and what year?

any idea what relay it was they replaced?

you might find the techs are finding it hard, sound silly but for warrenty renalut say we must test things in a certin way eg follow there methods, which sometimes say replace this unit (possible relay in this case) and if fault carrys on replay say uch or something along those lines, so it may not be the techs at the garage fault.

renault go for the cheeper option firstly, cos it would be stupid replaceing the uch say if it was just a relay at fault, but things like the comp its very hard to test and say that is at falut. but

all i can say is good luck and make sure you tell them everything you can about whats happening, the more info we find the better

good luck mate

cheers for the reply mate.

its a 51 plate 1.2 16v. when you turn the key you get no starter action at all. the only noise you hear is a click from the fusebox under the glovebox-ish. think that is the uch switching?! never had a multimeter to hand when its playing up (really intermittent fault) so have never actually been able to test whether voltage is getting to the solenoid/starter. if it was then obviously the fault would be there. renault couldnt get it to not start when they last had it, but it did in the end and they just said they traced the power as far as a relay and that they changed it. even so, there sometimes feels like theres a bit of a delay in the starter kicking in after you turn the key which made me suspect the solenoid, but then again if they did trace a relay fault last time then surely it must be the same thing now? or maybe that wasnt really the problem last time. if it was though then surely there is something else that is causing the relay to go - so there not really fixing the problem. its doing my head in though, when ive kicked up about it they tell me the same stuff about having to have a proper diagnosis before theyll change parts etc. no good to me when i have a broken car they wont/cant fix though.

had a k-tec zorst fitted since the last visit so i bet they try and tell me the warranty wont cover it now! if that happens then one of them will be feeling my knuckles.

so any thoughts then mark?

cheers, liam.

I had a problem just like that on an old car - turned out the battery was faulty and wasnt holding enough charge, might be the same????

Youll find it does bump start and will quite possibly be ok for a while.

Get any old garage to use a Battery Tester on it (quick 2 minute test which should be free)

do you hear a ticking noise from the starter motor? Was a dead battery and there is a cable going to the solenoid with a clip on it that sometimes gets full of crap and cant make a good connection - enough to turn over the starter motor on my old clio.

well...

the car was in and out in a day this time. apparently this time the wire to the solenoid from the uch had had the connections cut off and new ones attached. theyve asked me to take it like that for now to see if that cures it, and if not then they will have to fit a new uch. was also told there was nothing wrong with my fuel injection despite only getting 300 miles to a tank driving like a bird!
