Advice on cleaning 172 engine please...

  320d M Sport

The rest of my car is looking showroom (no blag!!) after my 5 hour cleanathon today!! Except the engine...sooo how do i so it?! Ive already got AutoGlym engine cleaner as i used to use it on my VTR, neverdone it on the 172 though so would really appreciate a guideline.

Thanks very much, youre a lovely bunch...........

I spent most of one Saturday buffing (ooh-err) all the aluminium bits around the engine with some anti-oxidant metal cleaner, and it looked soooo fappin good - until it all oxidised again a couple of weeks later! Ive now given up on the engine bay, especially since the power steering fluid ejected itself from the tank and found its way onto most things under the bonnet while I was out for a quiet drive...

Steam cleaning sounds a good idea - gets things nice and shiny without any actual effort! I just wonder how all the electrics will cope with the moisture though? Anything more than a slight drizzle and I start to drive with my fingers crossed!!! ;)

I had an engine steam cleaned before and wasnt impressed, took some grime off but not much - some reccomended wonder wheels to me today for the alloy parts, havent tried it tho.

Nice...but does it stay nice for long or does it oxidise again???

Have you used a polishing wheel?? and with what??

Its been like that for about 4 months now and its just the same as it was when it got done and it was done with a small air buffer.

Hi Paul, not started yet but id the truth be told Ill just be copying yours, I think it looks spot on. I need to find the right tools for the job, usually i NEVER touch anything engine wise so im a tad reluctant.

Going to have to start on Saturday so Ill (hopefully) have it done next weekend....... bet i balls it up!!

Have you tried that stuff called gunk??? It stinks but works a treat. The only problem is you have to hose it off when its done its thing!!! Just keep electrics protected and start car asap after to dry it all out. Havent used it on my clio yet but had good results on other cars. Bloomin stinks tho......

You might already know this (or just sad like me! )but WD40 actually stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt!!!
