Advice on these 182s please

Hi guys,

Martin here. I haven't posted on here in a long time but I'd appreciate your thoughts on the following cars which I'm considering buying to use as a second car and as a bit of an investment. I'd be grateful for your views on the price vs everything we know from the adverts and from without seeing the cars at this stage. My criteria is to buy something with less than 40k, with a full service history, having had key work done.

Am I misguided in thinking that if I sold any of these in 5 years I could hope to make similar money to what I paid, assuming I cherish the car during my ownership?

I doubt you'll get anywhere near what you pay for them in 5 years time.
both will be well under 2 grand IMO.

A trophy will hold it's value better

I made money on my 182 when I sold it, but they seem to be all over the place price wise, Surely low mileage good condition cars will command a premium in the future?

Yes, I wouldn't buy one as an investment. A better choice would be a Trophy, Integra Type R/S2000/Accord Type R or something like a VW Golf mk2 GTI or Corrado. I'm sure there are other options but I could be here for a while listing them all.

True but if you consider wanting to buy now and use it, come 5 years time it'll have a decent number of miles on it.

Thanks for the replies so far folks. Based on your advice regarding the price of the second example, I won't pursue that one. With regard to the first one, what do you think about the price? Should I be looking to reduce that or is it a fair price given the work that's been done vs the condition?

I've looked at trophies. The following example isn't out with the realms of possibility but it scares me tbh - in terms of the tuning and me not having a clue about such things. Any thoughts?

I am sure robs is a nice car but its been for sale for ages..
even if you take the supercharge off robs, stick it back to standard, and sell the kit to cover the costs of doing all that. your left with £9000 trophy with 33k. Thats not a particualry great price for a 33k car. but if you didnt drive it it might one day be worth that or slightly more. But then a 5 years cycle will inc a belt service. so that £500-700 your going ot have to cover in your profit margin.

One lucky owner bagged a20k car the other day. price hasnt been openly advertised , but a collector(dealer) tried to break the deposit by offering more to the seller(who luckly had some morals). That one would have been worth having.

Yes.

These are Clios, not limited-run specials (hell, even trophies aren't commanding much premium, unless they are as stock as the factory delivered them).

Nice car that BG but it will depreciate and £4250 is still strong money. That's a lot of investment to get back in a few years. I don't think you will get it all back.

I think the most likely depreciation proof route would be a mid priced Trophy or a cheap 172 Cup or 182. Some of them are cheap because of miles and as we know that isn't necessarily bad - you would be free to use and enjoy it and the likelihood is that used as a second car your high miler will self correct and be average miles in a few years but hopefully well looked after etc. You will get your £1500 - £2000 back easily then, maybe more.

A Ph.1 172 for £1,000 is probably the only way to not lose resale value.
But you'll still be spending on maintenance, irrespecive of what the car is.

Clio's are money-makers, just money-takers. If you REALLY want a car that will hold and potentially gain value:-

AW11 Toyota MR2
Honda CRX (the notch-back one with VTEC)

No it's drastically over-priced and the claims about power output are absolutely laughable.

imo you'd be better off with a clio thats a rare colour / edition. if thats the kind of money youre dead set in spending then a trophy is the obvious choice. this looks tidy - even better if you could find one with lower miles on.....

With a knackered wheel? That's top money for an 84k trophy. They might at least have swapped the wheel out.

Right hand steering wheel thumb grip is falling to bits. Plus it's had a bumper spray at some point, which is necessarily a bad thing but worth investigating.
 
silver 172 cup, less than a hundred in the UK I read recently. Rarer than a trophy if that's the case. 6.5k for a rs Clio is a bit silly irrelevant of its colour and mileage. Just think what car you could get with 6.5k with more performance..

ha ha i thought you meant wheel as in wheel/tyre lol. cant pick up those faults as im on an iphone 5 here (squint) ;-/

the ops choice but yes id rather get something else with that kind of cash but each to their own. id grab that silver cup if i had the space... itll most likely fetch regular 172 money and ill bet most joe bloggers on ebay dont know how rare it is.

Would definitely buy a trophy I've just sold mine 108k mileage and Sold it without even having to go down the usual eBay piston heads advertise route

The 182 optical bought for £3400 makes me think I should hold off and try and grab more of a bargain. The seller of the £4k 182 in my original post advised that someone from Norwich off here has offered the full asking but can't view the car until the end of the month. Time will tell if it sells. I'm not in a huge rush to buy but before Christmas would be better if the right car came along. I'm not interested in buying anything with more than 40k miles which is down to personal preference tbh but thanks for all the input - it's really useful to hear what people who know about these cars think.

Apologies, I meant the first one at £4K - a fair price?

I spoke to the guy a few weeks ago when i was buying mine, he wasnt for moving on price. I ended up going to down near leeds got a 1 owner 182, 71k miles, fsh, belts etc done in July for less than half that. Granted has a couple of silly things needing sorted, i will be using mine as a second car, no plans to sell it but if i did in the future i wouldnt be expecting to get what i paid back. If you want a car to buy as an investment youd be better off looking at mk1 or 2 escorts, rst's or mk1 golfs

^^this. even that gumtree bg is nothing special, its just another tidy clio. for example ive got a 172 with 57k on, in nigh immaculate condition, and i paid £1200 for it on an ebay auction. i just dont think clios, which are relatively common, are the best option when it comes to storing away to gain value. a trophy is the obvious (bar a V6) but i reckon itd be decades before you see any real price gain on it. phase 1 172s are rarer than any 182 but they still fetch regular 172 money. as an example im always watching rarer 80s/90s cars on ebay and last week a fiesta rs turbo went for £2100 (in good condition) and a renault 5 gt turbo (needed a small amount spending on it) didnt even get an opening bid at 2k starting. tough decision to make

If I remember correctly,price is related to supply & demand.
Supply will obviously reduce,so it all boils down how many buyers there are in the future and how much they are prepared to pay.
