Airbag + Serv lights - suspect Rotary Switch

  tiTTy & SV650
I've searched through 8 years of posts and can't find anything conclusive so starting a thread.

I recently had my oem mk2 ph2 172 steering wheel replaced with a re-trimmed oem wheel, on collecting the car from the local so called 'specialist' the airbag and serv lights were on.

I immediately checked the passenger seat pre-tensioner wiring and it wasn't to blame. So today I took the car to Renault to connect it to the clip system to see what fault codes were stored and if it merely needed a fault code cleared.

Renault highlighted that there were stored faults relating to the passenger seat pre-tensioner but said this wasn't current, backing up my initial check. The 'Faults test' sheet they printed out has a 'Drivers Front Air Bag Circuit 2' notice on it. The mechanic told me he believes the rotary switch has been damaged when the wheel has been swapped as they haven't correctly aligned it.

Has anyone experienced this before? I don't want to replace the rotary switch until I know it really is the likely culprit!

Cheers, Rory

Sure I read this in another thread but you have to make sure it's aligned properly before the wheel is put back on, I.e a certain number of clicks into position otherwise it's throws the lights on the dash

Cheers, any idea if the rotary switch is the same as the squib / slip ring part? Or something entirely different?

Noticed that the steering lock doesn't seem to be functioning correctly and the lights go out initially then come back on a few seconds later as if its the result of an ecu test sequence.

Sound like rotary switch / slip ring / squib fault?

it could be that the high or low pressure plugs have not been refitted properly on to the airbag unit, one on either side of the bag, if phase 2. as its giving a single curcuit fault , check the air bag connections , dont forget to disconnect the battery at least 1/2 hour before playing with the airbags

Thanks Steve,

I'm going to have zero time to look at this due to work commitments, the 'specialist' garage won't be getting my business ever again as they have tried to cover themselves saying the wiring was non standard. So I've bit the bullet and booked it in to Renault to sort out the mess, I'll bend over and take it on this occassion :(

If the rotary switch was buggered, or the sps, it would throw the traction light on too

I'm not sure that that's 100% the case, I agree it's a possibility but have read a few reports of rotary switch failure where there is no mention of the traction light. Plus the diagnostics highlighted the rotary switch apparently.

i've looked at 2 cars on clip now which have both had rotary switch issues, and they both showed the same fault. Might not be the same in your case though.

"Traction" control is ABS controlled so the SRS system *shouldn't* trigger this... "ESP" on the other hand takes in to account steering angle and so does use the "SAS" which is part of the Squibs sub-assembly on ESP equiped vehicles.

I need to ask; WHY is the wiring to the sterring wheel airbag "Non-Standard"... have you de-bagged it and resistored it for an aftermarket wheel?

The wiring is standard they made an arse of it and tried to say it's non standard to cover themselves.

It's a re-trimmed 172 wheel with original airbag, no resistors / after market wheels or anything like that.

What complete fcuk-tards then - It really should go back to them with a brick attached to the keyfob especially if it wasn't on before hand. I can't understand how they've managed to screw the pooch so badly with a steering wheel off/on job!

Rotary switch replaced, all faults cleared, no lights now and some thieving bar steward stole my aerial lol

New wheel (before airbag fault resolved):

£230! Part was about £100 as was labour, plus VAT.

Going to contact the original garage telling them I have no confidence in them and tell them what they've cost me.

ouch. Not the cheapest then. At least you have no christmas tree dash anymore :D I'd definately complain mate, not on at all that to be honest.

Aye, happy to have it sorted. Track rod end next week, I like to keep my cars mechanically tip top.

I don't want to let them get away with it, refrained from dropping in as I would have lost my temper.
