airbox question (with pics)

  05 1.4 16v clio
I have a 1.4 16v dynamique, and i was wondering if it is safe to remove the resonator box (thats what i think its called!) so that the standard air filter can 'breathe' more easily?

I took it off earlier out of curiousity and it makes it sound slightly throatier, and i was just wondering if it would be safe/ok/legal to remove the resonator box completely?

The resonator box:

air filters at the back, have seen a few with the resonator box removed but have had a cold air feed pipe fitted to them.
