aircon pump whining/whirring

Hey

My housemate's clio 172 has developed a fairly loud whirring/whining noise from the aircon pump. Do they do this when they run out of gas or is it fubared?

He mentioned that the aircon didn't blow cold to start with, so it sounds to me like it's run out of gas for an extended period and cooked itself .

I'd like to know the answer to this question too.

My 172 started making a horrifically loud screeching / whirring noise when the aircon was turned on. I've had the car for the last 58000 of its 87000 miles and have never had it re-gassed or anything. So probably the same thing!
