Another Dephaser thread (I think) But Something Else...

Hi guys,
I recently bought a Clio 182 that had a Cambelt change 3 years ago, but no sign of the dephaser being changed. The car sits on nearly 90000 miles if that is of any use. The weird thing is that around that area there is another noise like a pulley or something like that, but can't be certain. Also worth mentioning it that the car idles pretty rough when warm, worst than my golf 1.9 TDI 105 and that is some shaky tractor... hahahha. I don't know if you guys can give me a hand identifying this weird (to me) noise and also it sound like a dead dephaser. A link of the video:

Thanks for your help in advance, really appreciate it!

Sounds lyk a noisy dephaser and a bearing if you ask me could just be all the dephaser , and if tge dephaser gets too bad it can knock the timing out a touch and cause a bad idle

Thanks, it might be related or might not be, as the vibration at idle gets worse when moving the steering wheel on the spot (Without the car moving).

Is the rattle there when cold ?
I will check tomorrow and I will post a video, but I am pretty sure the idle is fine when cold as it is the diesel sound.

Thank you all for your replys

IIRC dephaser doesn't ever do damage just gets noisy?

That might be the case, but the rough idle and the whining noise is an indication that something is not running as it should and might be putting extra stress on some components that could potentially fail and ruin the engine, am I right in thinking this?

Correct, you could try taking the aux belt off and starting the car oviously not for very long as the water pumps on this belt just to see if the noise goes away and if it doesnt then it with be the dephaser

Time the crank up and just pop out the 2 rubber cam bungs to see if everything is ok

I will try and do this during the weekend and I will post the outcome. Shall I take the aux belt after running the car for a while or when cold?

Hi Ben,

I have done a video of the car from cold:

As for the 2 rubber cam bungs, not sure what you mean by this, are this the ones near to the airbox and throttle body? what shall I look for in there? (I am guessing that I should crank the engine by hand and check if the timing is correct by aligning horizontally the groves at the throttle body end, am I right?)

Look behind these bungs
