Yep normally a write off.

Did you/they not know anything about the recall? Its been pretty well documented.

Surely if you checked the common Clio fault you would have kept on top of the issue? No offence of course but it's easy to blame Renault.

Oh and if they repair the roof it shouldn't be a write off.

There's a difference between a common fault and a something like this, a common fault is let's say an indicator bulb failing due to a connection. I was aware that there was an issue, but had also heard that they were sending a letter out to people it concerned, and as I hadn't received a letter for either of my clio's I also have a 1.2 2005 plate, I assumed that it didn't concern me.. otherwise I would have got it changed! I'm actually trying to get Renault to pay for damages due to an oversight on their part with informing myself, I wouldn't mind but the cars only done 16,000 miles the bonnets barely been lifted!

It was a universal recall, i started a thread about it in 2009.

Like i say, you'd need to be pretty well retarded to not have heard anything about it, especially owning the 'flag ship' of the range.

Agree with this, it's been on Watchdog and everything.. Plus why don't people lubricate their own latches when know there's a common fault? First thing I did..

Just took this out of a article, "It says it is writing to what it claims are 400,000 Clio II owners in the UK to invite them to visit their local dealership to have the bonnet catch inspected, lubricated or, if necessary, replaced free of charge." As I said before, if you don't receive a letter you don't expect to have a faulty catch.. I did maintain the latch and everything else on the car and have worked on many cars before!

Unlucky, close the bonnet properly next time, If you go to a Renault dealer they will show you how to open and close your bonnet correctly. They will also show you how to maintain your catch.

yeah, sounds like a top idea pal the fact it's got a thatcham grade 1 alarm with bonnet sensor kind of already tells me when the bonnets shut ;)

They replaced my catch FOC, but didn't give me any bonnet closing lessons :(.

I've always lubricated my bonnet catch on a regular basis . It wasn't showing much signs of rust and i thought it was operating as it should , although on the odd occasion it never popped up as it should . Having taken it in due to the 2nd recall and having a new bonnet catch fitted FOC a few weeks ago i now know it wasn't operating as it should . The bonnet pops everytime now :) I'll bet there are 1000's of Mk2 Clio owners out there who are or were oblvious to the fact that there is an issue with the catches .

Cheers buddy, I was oblivious to what kind of damage it did cause! I thought it would only be a minor thing, the only reason I'm trying to claim off of Renault is because its a very young car in terms of mileage, there shouldn't be as big of a problem when compared to older cars, the fact that its got a bonnet alarm so I know it's closed because of my OCD and I never received a letter for EITHER of my clio's one Iv had for over 2 years and the other I purchased 8 months ago! And I'm a regular customer at Renault parts in loughborough and they never once said anything to me about it which screams irresponsible..

Your alarm will only tell you if your bonnet isn't actually closed . Not that the catch has actually operated as it should and is holding the bonnet locked in place . Hope you get some joy out of Renault , but i doubt it . Like they've never acknowledged that there is an issue with the steering wheels melting , but they do , and hell of alot of them :( You'll have to keep us informed as to the outcome from Renault .

Mileage won't affect issues that happen due to a non maintained catch.

the fact that its got a bonnet alarm so I know it's closed because of my OCD
Yeh it'll be closed but the catch won't of returned to the "locked" position, hence it swinging back up.

You may be a regular customer but they won't know how long you've owned the car. As far as they're concerned the owner of the vehicle before you and who owned the motor in 2007/8 would of had the recall done. Currently there is another batch of letter being sent out, maybe your letter hasn't came yet, maybe the DVLA sent out the wrong address for your car. As shown in the other thread about the letters, people are still getting letters despite them being scrapped or just being a car they used to own.

Also do you honestly think for the last 5 years all Renault staff when they see a Mk2 Clio will ask "Have you had the bonnet catch checked?" Take it as life experience. You knew about recalls and checks then chose to do nothing about it.

I'm not saying don't try though, if you can get some help towards it or even get it done for free then Job's a good'un.

You think? I put a claim in, said everything I said there the women seemed pretty confident I would under the circumstances.. Their going to get back to me Monday or Tuesday next week I can repair it for about £300 but its not the point.. It's the fact that even the mot center I went to didn't even say anything about it and if there was such a fuss about it, wouldn't they?

  Clio sport 182 & 1.2
That's my point heez, this is the first time Iv heard of this fault at which point it's too late.. It's not playing denial, you cannot blame someone for not being as car inclined as some people and be associate to sites like this were the information is readily available. I only became a member in order to find out other people's instances and experiences, all the car fanatics I know have never heard of this fault! You can't ask someone to act on information that hasn't got to them, it's no plausible.

I fail to see a problem at all to be perfectly honest. I've covered tens of thousands of miles in 40+ clios that i've had and never had an issue with the bonnet.

Call me a synic (sp) but any car I own I make sure the bonnet is shut properly before I drive it.

I find the thread title amusing seeing as it's more than likely down to driver incompetence.

Exactly Dan, unless I am missing something? When I close my bonnet, I pull it up a bit to see if it has any play in it, I assume if it failed, it would simply pull back up a bit to the second catch (which also fails due to rust).

Unlucky chap. I'm going to check my bonnet more often now after I've opened it :)

And good luck with your claim against Renault
