Dear HJ,
Please can you clarify the law relating to warranties on imports? I have a six month old Renault Clio 172 bought from Trade Sales in May 2002 (sourced from a dealer in Paris according to the service book). The car was made in 2001. Renault claims that:
a) It only has a one year manufacturers warranty (I was under the impression all cars bought after Jan 1 2002 had two year warranty but Im happy to be proved wrong - it may be that because my car was built in 2001 that it is not covered by a two year warranty).
>>>>It has a 12 month warranty from the date it was first sold (ie to Trade Sales, not to you). Some manufacturers, notably VAG, BMW and Ford, adopted 24 month European warranties from January 2002; others did not.
b) Im being told by one Renault dealer that cars sourced and bought in the EU are not built to the same EU standards and do not have an EU warranty. Again, unless Im wrong, I believe this is rubbish.
>>>>>This is complete cobblers. Whoever told you this is a liar or an idiot.
c) Im being told I might not even have a paint/corrosion warranty (I have rust on the tailgate)
>>>>>>Thats true.
d) My headlight washer nozzles have shot off (a known problem on Clios) - one dealer wont replace them under warranty as the parts are missing - is this acceptable?
>>>>>>>You could have knocked them off so, not, they are not covered.
