Any tips/advice?

Hi, new to this site. I am currently in the process of selling my current car as I just can't afford to run it now and has cost me roughly £4.500 in 6 months.

I've been looking through auto trader and piston heads etc, and the only car that really strikes me and says, wouldn't mind having one of those. Is a 182 clio.

My budget is anything less than 4,500.

My question is, what sort of thing should I be looking for? One with both cup packs? Lowest mileage? On that has been modded? I've read the buyers guide and specs lists in the stickies.

One of the lads at work had a 172 cup, and he said that's the fastest out of the lot? As its lightest and has the best suspension set up? True?

Thanks

Depends what you want from it in my oppinion... 4.5 would get you a tidy Cup with change to spare but they're not for everyone. The 172 Cup is pretty focused & doesn't have Air con or ABS which is a problem for some people but personally I could do without as I love them.

182 wise I'd go for Cup packs certainly & make sure the car has good history & has had the belts done! This is relitively pricey otherwise.

Best suspension set up in my opion has to go the the Trophy as the sachs coilovers are the nuts but these fetch a premium for a good example plus the suspension costs a bomb to refurb. For track i'd be leaning towards the 172 Cup as they're a real bargain these days & are amongst the quickest standard for lap times I believe other than the 200.

Really depends what you want from the car & intend to use it for... Track = Cup. No Track = 182 with the trimmings as you've got the better interior and creature comforts.

£4.5k will get you a very tidy 182. Most decent examples sit at about £3.5k with the odd few above that.

Cup packs are a necessity, especially if you can afford it.

Low mileage isn't massively important (There are RS Clio's with upwards of 150k going strong) if the car has been well looked after but I personally would opt for a lower mileage car if I could afford, but i'd make sure a service history/well looked after car took precedent.
I'd avoid a modded car, especially if it looks like it has been done badly, but then again you might find a nice subtly modded one.

If i were you, i'd strongly consider a Civic Type-R as well.

Buy on condition & history, dont worry too much about mileage, unless its daft.

172 Cup is the pick of the sub £2k cars, 182 with Cup packs is the pick at £3.5k. Trophy is £4.5k plus.

If you want to fit aftermarket coilovers, go for a 172 or 'non-cup suspension' 182 as there is more choice available - 60mm bolt spacing on the 182 cup suspension models limits choice massively.

Cheers for the replies guys. Two of my
Mates have type r's. I currently own a 2002 heavily midden (engine wise) audi s3. But it's just ticked over 100k so it's going to depreciate quick now so I'm selling it.

A mate of mine also owns a very clean deep blue clio 182. Which he has had not a single problem with. But then he did pay 7k for it just 2 years ago.

I'm looking for a quick car that will handle very well. I can't live without air con, so I take it a cup is out of the question.

I love the 182, looks brilliant. And I'm sure it's not too hard to work on. And as I'm a mechanic im sure I can do most of the work.

Been on auto trader and such but can't really find what I think is a really good example. So does anyone no of any? Am willing to travel to look at it, If it's worth it.

Also I love the deep or colour, unsure what it's actually called. I think the only thing they need doing is lowering 30mm as they still sit quite high IMO even on the suspension pack. Or is that just the pics? And they are low?

Really looking forward to owning one. I've even already purchased some thumb gribs, as from what ive seen, nearl every clio suffers wear on them.

Another question... What are the most recommended mods on a 182, and brands. Such as exhaust, filter, springs etc. on the s3 i have a Turbo back scorpion non res exhaust system. Jetex filter, and h&r springs. Are these brands
A thumbs up in the clio world?

Welcome :)

182 non cup with both cup packs (which are darker coloured alloys, front splitter, bigger boot spoiler, and different suspension/hubs) make a cracking car out the box, but due to the bolt spacing getting aftermarket suspension limits your options, where if you buy a non cup 182 you have a much larger range of options.

For your budget you will get a tidy 182 - ignore your mate, the 172 Cup is the lightest, but if you sat all models side by side and had a big drag race, the difference in performance would not be huge by any means.

If you want to modify, then unless you have a good budget to spend, buying a modified car is the cheaper option, and mileage isn't hugely important as long as it has been looked after, though with your budget you should pretty much have pick of the crop.

These little cars handle very well, and unless you're tracking it monthly I wouldn't go much lowe rthan about 20mm or so lower than standard, I loved my Ph1 with Eibach springs and new standard shocks

If you can up it a bit more, then you could afford a Trophy, which IMO is the best Clio out the box.

I prefere the ph1's, as I think the front end looks better, and the throttle cable improves the drive compared to the later cars FBW.

They say the ph1 is the fastest of the lot, but to be honest, get them in a drag race, and I doubt there would be any difference.
Depends what youre using it for, fast road or fast road/track, but i would go for a 182 with cup packs. Best of both worlds and better colour choice of the 1*2 range. Also become a member and have a look at the for sales on here, some nice LY's for sale.

Yeah I'm planning to become a member, what's a LY? Probably a stupid question, but I'm all new to this. Just after fast road, never do track days.

Why do they say the ph1 is faster than the ph2?

Welcome to the site chap.......

LY refers to Liquid Yellow, a rare colour for 182's.

For your money id be looking for a nice 182 with Cup packs (As Russ says the darker grey wheels are the easiest way to spot) a set of Eibach springs will lower it nicely and make it handle well without ruining the ride. Id look for as standard as possible or just a few choice mods. Its easy to ruin one by moddifiying too much. They are fantastic drivers cars out of the box and make for a lovely enjoyable road car that if looked after will not give that much trouble

A 182 Trophy is the pick of the bunch but im not sure if you'd get a nice one for your budget? They were a limited edition of 500 cars, only came in red and had Sachs suspension.

Yeah have spoke to the owner and arranged a viewing. The interior is being back back to standard Thursday though. Apart from steering wheel. Have to see if I like it. Can always purchase a normal one and sell that one on.

Also am twisted between the black wheels and silver standards. I love the black ones. Misses is begging me
To have silver ones.

if your doing fast road and not track work (although perfectly suited to track work) the best thing you can do is brand new genuine dampers all round, a set of eibach sportlines, solid top mounts, fresh track rods and track rod ends and a geometry setup to finish it all off! makes them feel brand new and pin point sharp again!

personally i prefer the looks of a 172, prefer the wheels, lack of dodgey sitting exhausts and colour choice. a 172 with 182 exhaust manifold is perfection imo! thats what i had!

Get Steve's 172 bought, you won't find a minter 172 for sale.
As for the turini alloys, if you prefer silver, just do a swap on here, someone will want some mint black turini's.

  PH2 Flamer
Yeah that's what I explained the to mrs. Said I can always swap or sell them.

Literally buzzing. All I need to do now is sell the Audi. Anyone? Haha

  PH2 Flamer
Not yet, had a few silly offers for the Audi. :( so which means I'm unable to purchase the clio. Am going to view it Tuesday, and will leave a deposit. Just was hoping not to do 2 trips there and back. As its like 2 hours away.

Might become a member on here and advertise it, weather a Renault enthusiast wants an S3 or not I don't no lol

Well I still have the Audi.

Have left a deposit with Steve for the 172. Which I actually cannot believe the condition of.

Am picking it up on the 1st of July!! Woop woop!

Just got all my new cleaning stuff as current stuff is well used and blue from
All the poor boys polish/wax.

Excited isn't the word
