Anyone with a rotary going to WSR?

  Golf GTD Mk7
Hi all,

After a VERY frustrating weekend of paint correction (well that was the idea anyway), I have decided to purchase myself a rotary polisher as my G220 doesn't quite cut it (pardon the pun).

Was having to use a 4" pad all over the car and several hits also. So as you can imagine when you're looking at doing the whole car I got very fed up and stopped a quarter way round. Correction was minimal. My RB paint is soooo hard it's not funny. Don't get me wrong, the G220 works well on other paints (ford(burned through :S very quickly) and vauxhall farely good correction on RDS) so i'll be keeping it for plastic panels and areas that the rotary might struggle.

Anyway, i'm looking at getting the kestrel rotary from Matt,

http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/Kestrel_Rotary_Polisher_1.html

with the 3M backing plate. Seems a good price and design, but i'm still open to suggestions? If anyone has a rotary they'd recommend (i know the makita/milwaukee ones are well renound, but pricey) or one of the above and fancies bringing it to WSR so i can have a feel(you know what i mean) and a look at it?

Thanks

Jonny

I love the fact that "PC" has become the world general term for an Orbital Polisher!

PC is actually a Porter Cable, a brand much like Black and Decker in the UK. So technically a PC is what I have, the Megs G220 is an Orbital . . .

What pad/compound combo did u use? The g220 is a great little pc

menz intensive and LC cutting spot pad. Tried a few with no luck. Rotary is the way forward for speed and better finish. Just needs a bit more practice.

You got yours yet Jamie?

ps. Yeah i know what you mean about the PC. G220 is arguably better, less vibration etc. but they're both orbital machines.

Nope not yet fella, it's coming this weekend as part of a part exchange for doing a guy's car.

And orbital polishers were originally known, to the old school, as Dual Action or a DA for short.

Schooling the younguns since 1981. :rasp:

Oh and technically they were DAP - Dual Action Polishers, or ROP - Random Orbital Polishers.

The new updated Silverstorm, it's part ex against a full detail, remember Tim, the guy who took his car to American s**tstorm Detailers that f'ed his car up? This weekend, OOOHH YYYEAAAAH! Actually really looking forward to it!

ah right, never noticed that one. any reason why that one? presume the variable speed control works the same as the makita and other ott polishers.

Did you get one Jonny?

DA is a waste of time, and for amateurs who are scared of burning through their paint ;)

Get a rotary, and do your car three times as quickly.

Not yet mate. i'm still looking into it. Funds and job are dodgy at the mo. Hopefully when it settles down that will be my next purchase :)

Only reason was that the guy I was meant to be detailing last weekend has it and wanted to part ex. GF issue meant I couldn't do it :(

Lol at the DA comment.

lol kind of true in a way though jamie. DA only came about for amatures to try their hand at polishing. Once you've mastered the basic skill on the rotary the range of correction is far far superior. Not a waste of time, but the time it takes to use one is wasted considering it can be done twice as fast and better with a rotary machine.

Yeah, totally agree, hence looking to get one. Plus, five years on having never put a foot wrong, the PC has started to skip when turning off/on. Thing there is a loose connection somewhere.
