AOL and Broadband, modem, wires etc!

I'm on AOL Gold (8Mbs) and am sick to death of all the wires and little BT Voyager 105 piece of sh*t. What router do I need and is it easy to set up? Netgear or something? I've searched on here but I'm more confused than I was before I even bought a computer. In 1988.

Help would be good, like what I need, and how to go about setting it up. 1000 Rupee's for advice. Or maybe even a thanks.

any ADSL wireless router will work. Netgear ones are good :)

also very easy to setup, dont think you could even c**k it up ;)

Cheers Adam. Specific ones, or any? There are a few! :S

Then what do I do? Just follow the CD instructions? I've read loads of pish about inputting your IP addresses and all that jazz. Its probably easy enough, but on one of Sebs threads, his head seemed to implode. I dont want that.

there built to be easy to set up, in theory, if u get stuck during setup give the helpline a ring. wen i set up my m8s aol to work with belkin router it was just a case of typing email adress in the 'user id' part and the password in said box. although it did take a night to work it out, once u've initially setup the router with all the user stuff any other pcs will link up straight away

Im on AOL aswell, and want to go "wireless" but Im only using a USB connection not a ethernet thingy because my AOL want connect via ethernet.

So that leads me nicely to my question...is there a router available that doesnt use ethernet?

Sorry for the hijack princess

I have no idea LOL But ill take Chris's advice and ring them.

Have you got the new AOL dialler thingy? you can connect like any normal ISP now without having to open the crappy software. Ive got mine to connect when I turn the machine thing on and I guess disconnect when it crashes, I mean turn it off.

Hmm, no. I double click on the AOL icon then log on as normal.

Oh.

Ive got a wee AOL icon next to the time in the bottom right corner. Right click it and it says 'connect with dialler','dialler setting' and some other rubbish.

Its all legit AOL software btw, can download it from their website I belive.

Netgear DG834G, should do the job fine, manages on my 1 meg broadband on wireless anyway, i had a voyager 105 from aol and it was a piece of S***. constantly losing connection, but i got the netgear router instead and its been fine ever since. Also just got a free one from aol when i downgraded my account (its the one they give you free when you start a new contract). Its a good pieve of shiznit, and you can download the software off their website to set it up.

Oh and before you try ringing them to sort it, try using the live help on AOL. means you get to type to one of them rather then listening to an indian named george. I rang up to ask why my platinum connection was only getting 1meg and they downgraded me to silver (same speed) and sent me a new router for a tenner a month less.

Oh and happy birthday.

must have been a 10 mins job all in, i had to do it for my mum after she had her new pc the 105 would not work aol know its an existing problem so there was not much to argue about she did have to sign up for a new 12 month contract but it worked out cheaper and faster than what she was on before anyway:approve:
if they do start on just ask them for your mac address and tell them you are going to move suppliers...

I was on AOL Gold 2MBs which was £24.99 and phoned up to cancel the account. They said they would put me on AOL Gold 8MBs for £17.99. F*cking jokers, I was paying £24.99 for so long when I could have been on a faster connection for less for months! Anyway, all sorted now, but as said could do with a router.
