Asus Eee PC 4 gb

Been looking for a laptop but spotted these bargain little beautys so got one yesterday, the 4 gig model with webcam and what not for 219 quid, seems like a lot of equipment for the money and ideal for what I want. Now they come with Linux installed, loads up very fast, seems very stable and everything loads instantly (boot up time is about 15 seconds!). But as I've used Windows all my life I dunno how to install/uninstall stuff on it. I understand you need to run some command prompts like ./configure and /make etc but not been able to get it to work yet, anyone give me some hints and tips please? Or should I just install Windows XP?

Oh and any decent software/games I should get for the Eee Pc?

I have also been looking at that laptop. You might be better waiting a few months for the 20gb XP Version for around £300. Although, if you cannot wait, This Website is a good place to find out how to install things on the laptop and even helps with installing XP on the 4gb model.

the newer models will have atom chips which are gonna run slower than the current models...

Bit slower then Linux does, about 20 seconds I think, doesn't have a hard drive, its solid state which helps make it load quicker.

Just read up about using advanced mode rather then easy, why Asus didn't ship them in advanced mode I dunno, its soooooo much easier to use, boot up times a tad slower but the OS is much like windows now, everythings easy and simplier to access and use for those used to windows os.

They are all bringing them out now, there's the 9 inch EEE out and there will be another out in a month or so with the Atom chip. But most manufacturers are bringing them out atm, prices aren't great on some of them though.

For 219 quid for this I don't think it can be beat. Loads up very quick, ideal for carrying around, great at home cos saves me going upstairs to office, can just leave main pc for downloading stuff and sit downstairs on this. Yes I know you can get 2nd hand laptops for the money but nothing as quick as this if all you wanna do is browse net, check emails and do basic office stuff.

They do actually look like cool little laptops, but personaly I would have gotten summat with an option of using it as a Windows based laptop (with the ability to install linux if you really wanted it).

linux as your only option isnt good!

id have just got a cheapo lappy myself cos linux would do my head in hehe.

My HP laptop which ive had over a year is reet fast and was only about £350. Can prob get it now for less than 300 brand new.

Can see ur point, but would need to have windows on it for me hehe.

You can install XP tho yoth, it comes with Linux as its a free OS therefore keeps the costs low, if it came with Windows it'd cost more because of the price of a Windows license, hence the more expensive versions running windows.

Linux OS in advanced mode is very much like WIndows anyway, cept it loads much quicker and touchwood hasn't crashed or become unstable yet, pretty cool OS tbh.
