autocar 182Trophy main review/ front page

  MKIII 138

trophy review !
says it will keep with porches and the suspension is amazing it soaks up bumps unlike any other car due to its dampers that are 10 times the price of the standard 182 ones.

can the dampers be fit as an aftermarket mod to the 182 and then be setup as the trophy is or maybe same dampers but even lower springs ?

The whole set up should fit fine, its just getting hold of it.

Then theres the price. Say a std damper costs £50, thats £500 a corner for the shocks, plus the cost of springs...

If they really do cost that much then it makes the Trophy something of a bargain!

Keep up with which porsches? (in the twisties presumably). Wouldnt an elise or a vx220 could do the same.

well the old boxster has the same power to weight. and the 182 also has the same power to weight as a 3.0l bmw z4 so i dont see the problem.

I set my konis on there maximum setting the other day and the accelaration was miles faster as the power was getting to the ground much better. so dont be suprised if the exellently setup trophy with its cherry picked engines and light weight wheels cant do buisness with performance cars costing 20K or more even.. lets face it you can buy one already for a poxy £13995 on autotrader brand new. yet the kind of cars it can keep pace with are 4 higher insurance groups, drink more fuel, are higher road tax + servicing and considering there initial cost depreciate just as much as the clio.

a great car that can mingle with much more expensive cars as does the 172 and 182.

the most anyone can expect is for a supermini to keep pace with a rep mobile saloon at best i.e a 2.0l zetec mondeo but the truth is hard to bear for most as its power to weight is stunning for such a cheap car. no other manufacturer would dare before now to give such a small car 182bhp + sach dampers and even now i dont see ford competing or peugeot or anyone else for that matter.. face facts its an amazing little car with big, big performance.

BTW autocar have quoted the 0-62 time as 6.5 !!! considering the recently tested a 182cup at 6.4 the trophy may be faster stll at 6.2 thats wrx impreza speed, alfa 147 gta speed (250hp) lots faster than any V6 saloon car actually faster to 60 than a 330ci and thats also RWD !! so lets not forget a few years ago 8.5 to 60 was considered fast and still is quite fast for a lump of metal to go from standstill to 60mph.

a lambourghini countach only did 5.5 to 60 so times have moved on when a supermini can do a close six to 60.

tis ok until your out of warranty and you need to replace those shockers, i admire renault for doing this on such a cheap car, its amazing value for money for the whole package but imagine the dealer saying, by the way sir you need 2 front shockers and your out of warranty
thats £1000 + labour kind sir............
wtf !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im just coming from Dieppe whewr I had a talk withs the guys in charge of the Trophy assembly line.
To fit the Sachs dampers youll need to change the triangles, transmission cardans, direction rods, plus the dampers themselves. Thats around 1500 £ for the front assembly only and without labour ( which will be a lot as well )

^ dont wanna sound negative but the cost of replacing shockers is an absolute friggin joke, by the way this is not green eyed monster talk, am being practical, armed with this simple fact who in there right mind is gonna buy a trophy in 3 years thats out of warranty, potentially 40k miles, potentially in need of shockers in near future, in full knowledge that to replace shockers is likely to be 25% of the cars value !!!!!!!!!

wtf ?

well think about it if they cost 10 times as much they should last 10 times as long. i imagine they will be serviceable looking at the design.

get what you pay for though eh......and itll be pot luck....dampers only break if they are faulty (which will show itsefl up early), or if you abuse them over pot holes......in which case it could be avoided.

Its a fun car, id be happy.

Magazine was sold out. So is this chris harris basically saying this is the best hothatch ever bar none, better than a williams/mk1 golf gti/106 rallye/106gti? I swore my next car would be rwd I guess things change hopefully for the best.

I am definately sold if its available at the advertised autotrader price.

0-60 means sh*te in real life! 30-70, 10-100mph is what most people are impressed with!

most of the cars you mentioned above still do impressive acceleration after 60mph.
