  Dodgy one
:( Had it on the ramp at work teh other day and noticed theres a few cracks starting to appear, Its f**k all TBH but better to be safe than sorry

So i'm off to pages for it tomorrow, Its on a 182 with the aircon

Anyone got me any tips before i do it? Obv going to get it up as high as i can on my drive and jack the engine up to make space, wheel, undertray etc Anything else i can remove to make it easier job looks a right c**t :dapprove:

bumper and slam panel off, top engine mount bracket off, sound deadening on inner wing off, (if it's fitted, 2 trim clips).

Remove the battery, loosen the top gearbox mount nuts (the outer ones not the center) then jack the engine up and re-tighten the nuts, this will normally give you an extra half inch to get to the belt.

wise move my auxialary belt lost a small peice from the edge got in the cam cover which allowed the cambelt to ride over the crank pulley and take out the cylinderhead. so it goes

You dont need to remove the bumper or anything like that, remove engine mount drivers side/remove wheel arch trim and the trims on the inside of the engine bay drivers side you should then be able to get in and change it all.

Well i did it but what a b*****d lol

I think the pics will speak for themselves but just incase, this is what you have to do to change the Aux belt on a 182 with aircon, You dont have to take the bumper and Slam panel off like Mike says but it makes it a whole load easier on your back

I noticed it was worn when i had it on the ramps at work and wasnt particularly looking forward to the job

a £20 belt took about 3 hours to fit, Nearly cried halfway through when the tensioner casting broke on me, Nan babbling on in my ear = me not concentrating 100% and bang broke the cast on the tensioner making it very difficult to release the tension to slip the belt on
hmm.gif

Quick call to my mate comes round grab a few bits of wood lever, poke, prod back on it goes
laugh.gif
Ended up using bits of wood to release the tension on the spring once the belt was on because after the cast broke i had to take the top nut out off the tensioner to slide the belt on first. Proper monkey style (must not do jobs when parts dep is shut
no.gif
Glad its done though dont have to worry now about it snapping and taking out the Cambelt

Which is due later this year been an 04 :dapprove:

My hands are fooked now

I'm not doing it again

what part of the engine are you jacking it up on underneath? when you remove the drivers side engine mount? i am going to give this a go next time mine due.

  Recaro'd 182
i woudlnt be happy jacking it on the sump. is that what everybody else does? i was thinking of buying a frame to fit over the top of the engine and using the lifting hook.

btw did you have the tool to release the tension on the tensioner? what size socket is it again 3/8"?

  Dodgy one
The sumps stronger than you think as long as you spread the weight it'l be fine, and the tool is 3/8" :)

I jacked mine up on the sump. If you use a block of wood it'll distribute the load evenly along the sump

I would have but dont have the tools for doing it, I'm leaving that job to someone else now after the hassle i had today.

Mark i used a 3/8 sump key and 11mm spanner back to back

could you get a socket and rachet in or did you have to fabricate the tool.

I've heard a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter with a 1/4" ratchet fits in. You can't get a ratchet straight on as there isn't room next to the hole. I filed the side off a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter but I had a little "bit" that came with my ratchet spanners that basically has a 19mm bolt on one end and 1/2" square on the other. Got that on the modified adapter and then a 19mm spanner on that. If you release the top bolt of the alternator that will pivot down and make it easier to get the belt on.

You have to be careful with that Mark because theres the Aircon pipes right under the alternator so you cant put much stress on them :boring:

Thats the way i ended up slipping my belt on because of the nackered tensioner then i had to compress the spring after the alternator was all bolted back into place. Problem with these cars is everythings just shoved in where theres a space

Yeah I know. I only found out because that bolt came out when I was driving, alternator resting on the air con pipes for a good few miles before I realised. Small dent but they look OK. As long as you know though it is fine when doing the belt.

  NEED V6!
rich is the aux belt have anything to do with that spring sitting infront of the engine as think mine may have just broken it has fluid from the steering pipe all over it.

  RB 182 cup
the last time i did mine i found a stong jubbilie clip and put it round the tensioner spring then just wound it tight to take the tension off then changed the belts and undid it

Yep and mine has the same PAS leak by the sounds of it, I'm trying to get it booked in for warranty but not expecting anything :( Its leaking at the union and sensor by the looks too booo

  NEED V6!
would this be the PAS or the auxilalry belt, as the car will start up fine everything running smooth then when I try moving the wheel then the noise starts. All I can smell is the horrible fluid from the PAS.

  Dodgy one
Is it a screeching noise as in the belt slipping?

I'd have a prod about at your belt its quite noticable if the tensioners gone as it'l be slack. Is theres PAS fluid allover the belt too? you'd be best changing it if so, Ive given my engine a good clean today so i can see exactly where the leaks coming from, Hopefully i'l be able to establish the faulty seal in a few days :)
